The second edition of Globalization & Media is an outstanding, readable, and interesting text for international communications courses. Last spring I looked for a new text for my university Global Media Systems course. So many texts in the field are hundreds of pages, uninteresting, and unorganized. Lule's text was a big hit---for the professor and the students. Within the manageable 191 pages, Lule focuses on the importance of media's role in political globalization, cultural globalization, and economic globalization. Have media and globalization produced the "Global Village" envisioned by Marshal McLuhan or the "Global Village of Babel," as predicted by Lewis Mumford? The question makes for interesting class discussions.

This is required reading for a college Global Media course. It is really well written and the author is easy to follow. He is definitely knowledgeable and knows how to write in a way to keep his audience interested. I am actually reading ahead because I am enjoying the book so much.

It's a Textbook, What Do You Want?

I've been told, that the tenth edition is a great improvement in the chapters about modern media (internet, social networking sites, etc) are a great improvement over the ninth edition. Personally, I never had to get the 9th edition so I wouldn't know, although reading from the description I am glad that this one is offered in hardcover as opposed to paperback textbooks.

It's a textbook. Your professor requires it, you rent it (or buy it, if you're wealthy or are focusing in PR) and you should use every opportunity to suck the marrow out of it (particularly if you are renting it) because there is a wealth of information!

Teaching critical thinking instead of brain control

Nowadays, our educational system transmits so much nonsense that our children end up being complete idiots. Even worse : they end up being proud to be idiots ! Look at the success of the series "xxx for dummies". Of course this is all done on purpose. Capitalism thrives on idiots. Capitalism requires workers to fulfill only a very small activity within the bigger production process. Therefore school prepares us for our adult life teaching all kind of different topics totally out of context.

Now, instead of filling up the poor little heads of our children with a lot of nonsense out of context, the authors of this book propose introducing philosophy in the classroom, educating children from their natural way of questioning at different stages in their lives, and responding seriously to all those questions. The authors conceive the mind not like a passive recipient that has to be filled with useless facts, but would like the children to learn things with the same spirit that inspired the early inventors and discoverers. In this way, children would assimilate new knowledge far easier and they would understand the bigger picture. This would make them much more creative in their later life.

Such a world would be totally different. Democracy could finally become real. We would have a world full of critical workers and skeptical consumers. It wouldn't work for capitalism, that's for sure. But it would mean a lot to humanity.

The best way to reconcile the scientific conception of time with the evidence of introspection is through a phenomenalist metaphysic according to which consciousness exists in neither time nor space, but serves as a basis for the logical construction of spacetime and its contents.

Basic introduction to HUNA; with exercizes

This is a good basic HUNA book; but I honestly feel you would be better served by buying Max Freedom Long's earlier book "The Secret Science At Work" instead. "The Secret Science At Work" goes much further in depth.
I would recommend this book as an introduction for people that may be interested in HUNA
