Excellent, given the scope of the series

It is difficult to rate this fairly because you have to ask about the intended audience. If you are looking for an in-depth scholarly treatment of Matthew, this would be 2 stars. However, that's not the scope of this series. I've used many Tyndale NT commentaries over the years, and it is a very good series, but not as in-depth as NICNT, NIGTC, WBC, etc. With that said, France does an excellent job commenting on the kinds of questions people turn to a commentary for, and not spending too much time on the blah, blah, blah, that fills the pages of so many commentaries. While you aren't getting all the details, you are getting the fruits of top-notch scholarship. It's a great commentary, given its scope.

Though all the commentaries in this series are not equal, this is very good. His exposition of Ch.24 is well argued, even if you don't agree with his conclusions.

Leather Braiding.

I was wanting to learn how to do leather braiding over wooden handles and such, so I started looking around for leather braiding books ..I kept hearing good things about this book, and it seemed to have a high star rating, so I purchased it. It is a very good book to learn leather braiding from. Many different kinds of braids are explained and the instructions are pretty good. I also really liked the section that shows how to do various Turkshead knots. I was able to learn many of the round braids that I was interested in learning, so I'd say that buying this book was a good decision!

Learn more about mammals

I find the Pocket Genius books to be perfect for the grab-and-go situation. For example, you know you will have to drive long distance with the kids in the car. Who likes a child who complains while driving for an extended period of time. I remember when I was about seven years old that my mom had packed a special basket for me as we drove to Florida. When we drove back home, the things in the basket were changed in order to entertain me. These books are perfect for this kind of situation because they are small, don't take a lot of space and contains educational information in them. They can be easily slip into a backpacks and will appeal even kids in middle school. These book contain facts and information on specific subjects that could be interesting for kids.

MAMMALS
Over 200 profiles of individual species as well as informative spreads on anatomy, behavior, and classification will be found in this title. However, it only covers a small fractions of all the mammals found on earth. But Pocket Genius: Mammals will look at humans, whales, wallabies, camels and more and their place in the natural world. Its emphasis is also on modern practices. Some mention is made of impending developments enabling the reader to prepare for new practices, or equipment. The author has written the book with the students at nautical schools and colleges in mind. These include all levels, from the cadet, or trainee, to those studying for a Master's certificate, or various nautical degrees, or other qualifications. It is also meant to be a reference work, which can be carried at sea, as for example, the requirements of STCW and of the relevant IMO model courses are given prominence. The author recognises the contribution of William Burger in the early days of radar training for commercial vessels, whose influence can still be seen and heard in lecturers' notes in nautical colleges today. This book looks at the fundamental technology behind the bridge display, but does not take radar in isolation as today it is integrated with other navaids to a greater, or lesser extent. Several pages are devoted to radar plotting, as a ship's officer should be able to plot and determine the risk of collision when automation is not available. It also helps to build up an appreciation of relative motion, so when viewing an ARPA, the data looks to be correct. Due to the many types of navaids on the market, a navigating officer must familiarise his or herself of the equipment on the bridge. This can take time and should not be undertaken while on watch, the author stressed. This book is claimed by the publishers to be written in a simple format, bearing in mind that for many officers, English is not their first language. It is also aimed at a new entrant into the nautical profession and thus jargon and obscure acronyms have not been used, except for the traditional nautical terms.

An easily understood book with illustrations that show you what to expect when operating at sea

Few developments in the maritime sphere have been as ground-breaking as the development of radar and AIS (automatic identification system) since WWII. Their introduction has fundamentally altered how navigation is conducted, and it would be unthinkable nowadays to go to sea without either. Drawing on his wealth of experience, firstly in the Naval Service and later at Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI), Daire Brunicardi has produced a book that should be considered essential reading for anyone considering, or in the early stages of a career at sea as a ship's watchkeeping officer.

The information is presented in an easily understood manner, and illustrations allow an appreciation of what to expect when operating at sea. It covers basic radar principles at length, which gives a very firm grounding in radar operations. It expands on the various sections that comprise a modern radar system at sea, from the transmitter and scanner to the receiver and display.

The author discusses the various techniques that are applied when navigating a vessel using radar, with reference to collision avoidance and target tracking. Though visual pilotage remains the primary means of navigation in coastal waters, especially with the Naval Service, in cases where this is not possible, in restricted visibility at night, etc., radar comes into its own. The use of parallel indexing and concentric indexing techniques are covered in depth, with almost 50 radar plotting exercises that allow the mariner to hone his, or her, skills.

Modern developments that are having far-reaching effects on radar navigation are not ignored either. The integration of radar with electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS) and AIS has had a dramatic effect on the amount of information that is presented to the modern deck officer. The author remains positive with regard to these developments though cautions against over-reliance on these new systems to the detriment of the more traditional radar navigational skills.

This is an informative read that should be carried by all watchkeepers, regardless of rank, such is its comprehensiveness and attention to detail on a subject that is instrumental to the trade that we ply.

About the Author
Seyyed Hossein Nasr was born in Tehran in a family of traditional scholars and physicians. After receiving his early education in Iran, he came to America where he studied physics, the history of science and philosophy at MIT and Harvard from which he received his doctorate. Nasr was professor at Tehran University and founder and first president of the Iranian Academy of Philosophy. He is presently University Professor of Islamic Studies at George Washington University.

A non-political book on sufism

I truly enjoyed reading this book. Having read another excellent book by Corbin " Alone with the Alone", I was curious to see what relation is there, if any, between Shiism and Sufis, this book answered my questions in an honest non-political way.

Learn from the masters

The majority of the books written on Sufism are from authors who have not "tasted" it, and that is the reason they are insufficient, if not misleading. To explain Sufism, or tasawwuf, as a bundle of foreign influences outside Islam is ridiculous. If one wants to borrow, or has the need to borrow, then they would go to the source; be it from Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism and so forth. They would simply become Christians or Hindus.

Sufism is the kernel of Islam, the very center of its circle. Have there ever been non-genuine Sufi/Muslim practices? Of course, and nowadays more than ever. But that tells us about the condition of people, and their grasp (or lack of) of the core teachings of Islam, not of Islam, and Sufism itself. If one encounters some books written in bad taste does that mean that we should write literature off? That we should boycott masterpieces? That is what some legalism-obsessed fellas seem to suggest nowadays.

That is one of the many points touched. There is further elucidation of the meaning of the mystic quest; the relation between revelation, intellect and reason; description of the spiritual states; the encounter of Islam with other religions; excellent explanation of the root of environmental crisis, and more.

This is a source to learn from if one is a serious seeker, or genuinely interested in knowing something about the reality of Sufism.

A flawed masterpiece

I read this book a few years ago and was throughly amazed. Nasr exposition of Sufism is excellent. He plunges into history and literature to and brings out profound insight into some fo the aspects of Sufism. He essay on the Sufi Shaykh is wonderful. Nevertheless the book has its flaw. The insertation of perrenial thought and propagation of the Universalvalidity of Religions is dogmatic in certain essay. The author simply goes and concludes that Sufi thought stresses the Universal Validity of Religions. Such a statement if false and goes against the Islamic texts and there explanation. In essence the book is wonderful and contains beneficial knowledge, but at the end the perrenial taint leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. Overall good read but one should take caution about the above mentioned mistake.
