I actually learned a few things

This is my sixth book on sigils. For the most part it was a good read. For instance, on page 31 the author has us investigate our intentions and the consequences of them before actually creating a sigil. That's new. Also, pages 33-34 offers a few more suggestions on where to create the sigil. An example being, create the sigil "near the location of the goal you wish to achieve" (33).

I have to say, the author does a good job at introducing sigil magic. He even gives us two schemas that no other source mentions: the Discordion Legionaire Keop and Anagram methods.

Vincent's book did fall apart a little bit after the sigil chapters by introducing eight major influences in his life, which, while possibly of interest to some, was far from the books topic at hand. This part seemed to be filler and definitely could have been left out without losing anything.

The author's second appendix had some photocopies of his process. Beyond the fact that his writings hint at someone that actually practices, a thing some of the authors I've read did not convey, it was nice just to see what his actual process was like on paper.

As to buying the book, is it worth $17.00? No. Is it worth $5.00? Yes. It had enough new things to make it worth my time and money. It is a quick and easy read and what is offered is sufficient enough to practice sigil magic. If you are looking for a more thorough treatment on sigil magic I suggest Frater U.D.'s Practical Sigil Magic.

As to why I say A Guide to Creating Sigils is worth buying? Anyone who writes on a subject and actually adds to the dialog rather than just regurgitates what others say is good in my book, and Vincent Luce does add some things that I have not found from other sources. So, if I had to choose between a five dollar latte that leaves a nasty taste in my mouth, body jitters, and a strong desire to poop, and a book that offers some good suggestions and experiences for me to reflect upon and grow from, I would definitely forgo one over priced drink to buy Vincent's book.

Maybe it's just me, but I think we spend way too much money on addictions and not enough on things that help us cultivate ourselves.

This book changed my life!

This is the best book I have ever read! Before I got this book, I was a 98lb weakling who got sand kicked in my face at the beach. Now, look at me! I'm buff and rich. With the help of this book I was able to become self aware and this enabled me to focus my cosmic energy into the most rewarding of all human pursuits; revenge.

In the fullness of time, I grew into a hulking beast of a man. With every pound of muscle I gained, my hatred burned hotter. My only goal was to get revenge on the bullies who kicked that damn sand in my face. Once I was ready, I began to hunt them down one by one. I can't go into what happened next due to legal reasons but suffice to say, those bullies won't be kicking sand in anyone's face again, ever.

Only by creating my own sigil was any of this possible. Once I had my sigil, I was unstoppable. This book changed my life and it will change your's too.

Realism vs Idealism

Does America Need a Foreign Policy? by Henry Kissinger was published in 2001, shortly before 9/11. In the current paperback edition, he has added an Afterword on 9/11 and terrorism. While the Afterword is helpful, what is remarkable is how relevant his pre-9/11 text remains in the post-9/11 world.

Kissinger's title question is purely rhetorical. Of course America needs a foreign policy. His point in the title appears to be that American foreign policy has too often been the subject of domestic political campaigns which are focused more on electing the next president than on the country's real, long-term interests. This is a theme that he shares with the late George Kennan.

Kissinger's text follows a straightforward outline: Suggestions for US foreign policy with regard to Europe, the Western Hemisphere, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Globalization, and "Peace and Justice". I'll say more on this topic below.

Throughout the text, Kissinger advocates his standard theme of realism versus idealism, as he did in his magnificent prior work, Diplomacy. As a brief example, he points out that a seemingly desirable goal such as the peaceful reunification of Korea may not be as desirable as it might seem at first glance. A unified Korea, he points out, would become a major economic, political, and military power in East Asia. A more robust Korea might be seen as a threat by Japan, thereby destabilizing the current US-Japanese-South Korean alignment. Seeing a unified Korea as a threat, Japan might be tempted to go nuclear and withdraw from its close ties with the US. Do we really want this?

The theme of realism versus idealism becomes particularly pronounced in the chapter on "Peace and Justice". Kissinger's point here is that the basis for diplomacy established by the Peace of Westphalia (1648) was that the governments of the European powers agreed to:

* Deal with other governments as the sole, legitimate diplomatic representatives of their countries, regardless of the level of cordiality or hostility between them

* Refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other nation-states, specifically religious affiliations, which were the basis for the preceding Thirty Years War which had devastated Europe

These precepts held sway until WWI when the US President, Woodrow Wilson, injected a strong theme of idealism when the US entered the war. His goals were (1) self determination of nationalities, regardless of prior national boundaries, (2) "making the world safe for democracy", and (3) collective security. These goals flew in the face of the Westphalian accords by postulating the existence of a higher (but undefined) diplomatic/legal/moral authority that took precedence over peaceful relations between established governments.

This issue is of particular importance today as it underlies many aspects of US foreign policy. Without offering answers, I'll pose the following dilemmas which Kissinger's book brings to mind:

* There appears to be an inherent conflict between the goals of maintaining peace among nations (diplomacy based on realism, the Westphalian accord) and supporting idealistic goals generally accepted by Americas, including democracy and human rights in other nations (diplomacy based on idealism, the Wilsonian approach). Can we achieve both peace and our idealistic goals? If not, how do we prioritize between them?

* Legal structures in the West, especially Anglo-American legal structures, are based on the mutual acceptance by all parties (or at least most parties) of the existing legal system as a means of settling differences within nations. The concept of "international law" among nations is not so well defined and certainly lacks the level of universal acceptance required to make it effective.

There are tough questions. I thank Kissinger (and Kennan) for helping articulate them. Solving them will be up to their successors.

One view on how US Foreign Policy should be

This book is a treatise from America's top expert on diplomacy Henry Kissinger about the United States foreign policy in a post-Cold War world. It is unfortunate that the book was written before 9/11 and the start of the war on terrorism, save for a brief afterward that is mostly in line with Kissinger's pre 9/11 views.

The book is entertaining and put in a very organized sequence. It highlights the cross Atlantic world leading American-European alliance and offers fresh perspective on how these relations should develop as the European Union gains shape and witnesses a surge in its economic, demographic and geographic might.

Kissinger also talks about other regions in the world including the Middle East and Africa. The book has a much needed historical background about all of the events that it discusses making it easier for readers who are not familiar with overseas issues to get a grasp of what the author is talking about. Kissinger then gives his recommendations on how America should handle its world affairs in the coming century.

He debates the United States role in a growingly globalized world and offers suggestions on how America should deal with global organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the World Bank.

Kissinger sounds more often than not a traditionalist in his foreign policy perspective in that he doesn't view fighting terrorism as the world's top priority. He rather maintains a tone of what America should do to maintain its "assets" and "strategic interests" around the world and how this would define America's role making or breaking of world affairs.

The book also lacks accurate research and is kind of a blown up opinion. For example, Kissinger mentions a ruling Sunni majority in Iraq and an opposing two minority blocs, the Shiites and Kurds. It is a known fact, however, that the Shiites are the Iraqi majority.

A Diplomatic World Tour

Dr. Kissinger dissects the world into their geopolitical grouping, and discusses where current trends are taking each group. The book may be a little outdated since 911 and world terrorism was pushed to front stage, but generally the geopolitical groups remain. A united Europe dealing with a Russia once again as a rising power, the Middle East and the consequences of China becoming a mature power. As a reader that was of draft age during the Vietnam war it was ironic to read that Dr.Kissinger believes that the USA should not be a major player in the far East, but a better plan would be to play the power broker for the rivaling countries referencing Britain's role in regard to the powers on the European continent during the era of Napoleon.

This book is an easy read, very understandable. I read this book because the USA is always criticized for having no foreign policy every time World events hit us broadside.

A better idea!

Steven Bragg is a totally insightful and unique accounting writer, and as usual, he provides a very interesting discussion with this text. For me, it both inspired me to seek to become a Controller - and at the same time, discouraged me from hoping to ever becoming one. He sets the bar very high! But if your current job title is Controller, you should probably buy this book, and get to work reading and implementing its recommendations immediately, even though you have practically no chance of incorporating even 20% of these suggestions.

The main reason for my low "3" rating on the book is the weird and VERY problematic extra small font-size TEXT, which the author hopefully had nothing to do with. It must have been a publisher/cost savings nightmare idea gone terribly wrong! It is microscopic.

In the wording of a Steven Bragg "Best Practices" recommendations -
(too late to implement) *A better idea might have been to publish the 230 page book at a FULL 330 PAGES and increase the print size from the tiny 4Pt. to an industry standard and reader friendly 10Pt. type.

Reading this with a magnfying glass in one hand, like Sherlock Holmes, is an awkward process. It's elementary my Dear Steven.

About the Author

Peter Egan is one of the most readable writers in the motorcycle enthusiast world. His work first appeared in Cycle World magazine in 1977, and he has been a regular fixture there ever since. Peter lives near Madison, Wisconsin with his wife, Barb, a houseful of dogs and cats, and a garage filled with motorcycles, cars, and the sound set for his garage blues band.

Preaching To The Choir

I didn't see it coming when it popped up on my screen, Leanings 3 is coming. Manna from heaven, at last. I suspect you are already addicted to Peter's fixes on 2, 4, or even 3-wheelers. Leanings 3 does not disappoint, no need for citations here, merely to affirm that Peter knows what his readership hungers for and he shoved out tubfuls of it. Having read his body of works, Peter's formula of self deprivation (or is it self degradation in his case), and social irreverence is something many of us can identify with. Intended or not, I have always detect veiled undertone messages within his words. They are social commentaries of varied observations with cerebrally deep fried scenes, waking us to either conscious or unconscious self examinations of common follies, all delivered via our wheels of choice. 2 centuries from now, for a doctorate's research of American society in the latter 20th century, Peter's works would serve. For sure nothing new in Leaning 3, within are re-runs of prior CW pieces. But then I return to Sarah Brightman's voice, my favorite Mexican dive, Negra Modelo draft, my shredded jean and dark sweater, and Peter's articles. Motorbooks has done us all a favor with Leaning 3 with its publication, save me the trouble of digging through buried boxes of assorted magazines for re-reads. I am starting a new tradition of reading Pter's works once every ten years, they are that good. Peter has become our cult leader with sizable followers, as if he is not already awared.

More excellent stories from the king of motorcycle journalism.

I am a regular reader of Peter Egans columns but I find having the collected columns together like this better. Instead of many small nibbles I can immerse myself completely for a few hours and feel myself with Peter cruising the Wisconsin roads on a variety of interesting machines, sunshine on my back, wind in my face. He is truly the Bill Bryson of motorcycle writing. May there be many more books and articles.

Egan gets it just right.
I read his monthly comments in Cycle World and all of his moto reviews and this book is the best of the best.
The down to earth style is comfortable to read and always makes me smile.
This is a great compliment to Leanings ONE and TWO.

EXCELLENT book, GREAT information, FUN tips. The only thing it lacks is pictures!

This is an EXCELLENT book: thorough, detailed, and accurate. You'll find information most books don't provide, including wise warnings (do NOT buy an exercise wheel for a guinea pig), and good tips for training your guinea pig, which makes life with a guinea pig much more fun! The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it has no pictures. Pictures are less important than excellent information, but still, we (buyers of pet books) love to look at them. :-)

Great read with a lot of information!

It has been probably 15 years since I last owned guinea pigs and so I wanted a book to read as a refresher for me but also lots of good information for my 8 year old son who is just now learning about them. My 4 year old daughter might be interested in some of the information too however there are no pictures like most of the other reviewers state so I went ahead and ordered another book more geared towards her. This book was a great read and though there were a few repetitive parts, it was overall lots of useful information. We will be getting our 2 new guinea pig babies in just over a week when they are ready to leave mom and I am so excited to be able to teach them tricks. I did not even know you could teach them tricks!

I was considering having guinea pigs this book I found very resourceful, and was able to learn all of the basic care needed as a beginner to having guinea pigs, after reading it I was ready to find the right pair of guinea pigs, it was very helpful in knowing what was needed to get you started, also included tricks on training your guinea pigs.
