A wealth of information

Liz Greene is exceptional in the field of astrology and what creates a personality, She has written many books that are powerhouses of reading material. The following is just an example of her valued insight into different human personalities and elements. Quite revelational in her approach and so easy to comprehend. I recommend this book!

The permutations of human blindness are many and various, and divorcing or separating parents - or even those who remain living together but are emotionally alienated - will generally demand that the child choose one or the other. The love for the other parent must be denied, suppressed, silenced. This is terribly human. If we are hurt by someone, we find it hard to bear if someone else we love shows affection to the person who has hurt us. If there are oppositions between the 4th and the 10th in the child's chart, then the child's own inner division colludes with the parents' division. I have seen many, many examples over the years where the person has had to deny great love for a parent in such circumstances. The denial may be believed even by the person himself or herself. When we see Venus, Moon, Neptune, Sun, or Jupiter in a parental house, we know that there is a powerful positive bond with the parent, even if the relationship has also been very difficult. If any of these planets are in the 4th, they are likely to describe strongly positive and even idealised feelings for the father. But if there has been a break-up and the father has gone off - or if there are oppositions from planets in the 10th, even if he hasn't gone off - it may prove impossible for the person to keep such feelings in consciousness. The ambivalence may be too painful, and the sense of disloyalty to the mother may be too great to bear. Perhaps the father has left because of another relationship. Perhaps he marries again, and has other children. Then the problem is compounded, because the child's own jealousy allies with the jealousy of the mother and makes it quite impossible for the emotional bond with the father to be recognised. The relationship is destroyed, and the child, who is now grown up, says, "Oh, I haven't seen my father much since the divorce. I have very little to do with him. I see him occasionally, but we don't have much of a relationship." All the positive, loving feelings have been pushed underground, because we do not cope well with divided loyalties. We suppress them because we have to survive psychologically; and we have to live with mother.

This book is the text for a required class titled "Marriage and Family: A Christian Perspective" for my Bachelor's in Business Administration program at Faulkner University. It contains information I wish I knew 10 years earlier about communication in relationships and other topics. This book looks stupid but is actually very informative. Don't judge this book by the cover.

Christianity has often understood the death of Jesus on the cross as the sole means for forgiveness of sin. Despite this tradition, David Downs traces the early and sustained presence of yet another means by which Christians imagined atonement for sin: merciful care for the poor.

In Alms: Charity, Reward, and Atonement in Early Christianity, Downs begins by considering the economic context of almsgiving in the Greco-Roman world, a context in which the overwhelming reality of poverty cultivated the formation of relationships of reciprocity and solidarity. Downs then provides detailed examinations of almsgiving and the rewards associated with it in the Old Testament, Second Temple Judaism, and the New Testament. He then attends to early Christian texts and authors in which a theology of atoning almsgiving is developed―2 Clement, the Didache, the Epistle of Barnabas, Polycarp, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and Cyprian. In this historical and theological reconstruction, Downs outlines the emergence of a model for the atonement of sin in Christian literature of the first three centuries of the Common Era, namely, atoning almsgiving, or the notion that providing material assistance to the needy cleanses or covers sin.

Downs shows that early Christian advocacy of almsgiving's atoning power is located in an ancient economic context in which fiscal and social relationships were deeply interconnected. Within this context, the concept of atoning almsgiving developed in large part as a result of nascent Christian engagement with scriptural traditions that present care for the poor as having the potential to secure future reward, including heavenly merit and even the cleansing of sin, for those who practice mercy. Downs thus reveals how sin and its solution were socially and ecclesiologically embodied, a vision that frequently contrasted with disregard for the social body, and the bodies of the poor, in Docetic and Gnostic Christianity.

Alms, in the end, illuminates the challenge of reading Scripture with the early church, for numerous patristic witnesses held together the conviction that salvation and atonement for sin come through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and the affirmation that the practice of mercifully caring for the needy cleanses or covers sin. Perhaps the ancient Christian integration of charity, reward, and atonement has the potential to reshape contemporary Christian traditions in which those spheres are separated.

Though-provoking and dense, but worth interaction!

David J. Downs is Associate Professor of New Testament Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary. Downs has an MDiv from Fuller Theological Seminary and a PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary. Downs is the author of The Offering of the Gentiles: Paul’s Collection for Jerusalem in Its Chronological, Cultural, and Cultic Context and co-editor of The Unrelenting God: Essays on God’s Action in Scripture in Honor of Beverly Roberts Gaventa. Most recently, Downs has delivered a blockbuster examination into the charitable giving of the early Christian movement.

Alms: Charity, Reward, and Atonement in Early Christianity looks to overturn the Western idea of charitable giving—or more precisely “almsgiving”—as a means to bring about social reform or personal identity, instead positing the notion that early Christians were compelled to give as an efficacious means of atoning for sin. Almsgiving according to Downs, “refers rather broadly to the merciful provision of material assistance to those in need, including monetary distributions, food, clothing, and shelter” (p. 6). Thus, “atoning almsgiving” is the means by which almsgiving is understood to bring with it redemptive and meritorious qualities—a framework of “charity as a means of cancelling, cleansing, covering, extinguishing, lightening, or in some way atoning for human sin and/or its consequences” (p.7).

Downs’ exploration to establish the above reality is ambitious and at times may be too complex for some readers. In fact, if the subject matter is as important and pervasive as Downs contends, then I would assume an abbreviated version would be helpful for the average reader. That said, the average reader will still be able to glean from Downs’ overall argument. The foundation of the book begins in the OT (specifically the LXX) where Downs’ observes a profound relation between charity and reward in Deuteronomy and Proverbs among others. Next, similar observations are concluded within the Apocrypha (specifically Tobit and Sirach), the NT literature, the Patristic literature, and well into the second and third centuries. The notion of “atoning almsgiving” is then traced from the foundation (OT and Apocrypha) through the NT and into the early Christian Church (Basil of Caesarea, Clement of Alexandra, John Chrysostom, Origen, Tertullian, etc.), as observation upon observation are examined and presented to the reader.

While Downs’ is neither the first nor the last to make such observations concerning the practice of giving in the early Christianity (see Redemptive Almsgiving in Early Christianity by Roman Garrison), I am confident that Alms: Charity, Reward, and Atonement in Early Christianity is among the best, and it will be studied for many years to come. Still, as I mentioned above, there is an opportunity for such notions to be brought into a more condensed package for laity. Moreover, while Downs was thorough in his approach (sometime overly so), I still found myself at times very much unconvinced by his conclusions. This could be a lack of exposure to the concept that is being presented, or it could be that Downs’ argument for “atoning almsgiving” in the early Christian movement is not as established as he thinks. It is likely the former.

Complete Park Profile

I picked this book as an impulse purchase at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. I was pretty impressed! This gentleman's journey through the canyon was fascinating, with exploration of areas of the canyon that most people never see or even know about. He also does a great job of giving background information on the history, geology, and the lives of the native peoples around the canyon. This book is not a guide book to use for a vacation! It should be viewed as a good casual reading book, perfect to read when you are in your tent or cabin after your days' activities in Grand Canyon National Park.

Will Make You Want to Go

I admit, it must be hard to write a book about something as varied and diverse as a National Park. To weave together the different facets -- the geographical and human histories, the important physical features -- is challenging if one wants to engage the reader. Mr. Fishbein has certainly accomplished this in his portrait of Grand Canyon Country. While the volume is not quite as engaging as other volumes in the National Geographic series (Yosemite is, in my opinion, the standard), nevertheless I found myself moved to revisit the Grand Canyon with this volume in hand.

For anyone who would like to understand the geography, history, and thrills one can see firsthand in this wonder of the world, this book will give you as much as you need and more. The stunning photos are a bonus, but don't let them distract you from the visual imagery painted by Mr. Fishbein in his text.

Inside the Life

Even though Linda was very young when she lost her dad, she still has a pretty good memory of the times they shared together. While he may not have appeared to be a loving and caring dad, Linda feels as though he wasn't much different than any other father. He loved his little girl. I was in the same business as her infamous father, although a member of the Boston Mafia turned author. Linda seems to have a knack for writing. There were some instances that really made me understand the inner pain that she kept hidden for her world. Well done Linda...

The Real Deal

It seems that in recent years the children of various underworld figures have written books about what life was like living in mob households. The sons and daughters of John Gotti, Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, Vincent "the Chin" Gigante, John "Sonny" Franzese, Roy De Meo and I'm sure many others, including spouses and girl friends whose names escape me right now, have all contributed their input. When I saw this book, I thought to myself, "Okay, another book by a daughter singing the praises of what a wonderful man her dad was, even though he was a killer." This is definitely not one of those books. While Linda Scarpa adored her father as a loving parent, she was not in denial about what his other life was like on the mean streets of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, and makes no apologies for it. Even among wiseguys, Scarpa was especially feared and "respected," and his proclivity for violence earned him the title of "The Grim Reaper." When war erupted within the fractured Colombo family in the early Nineties, Scarpa was one of the principal players, often going out "hunting" for rivals with various members of his crew. Since Scarpa made no bones about his life in the mob and his home was often a gathering place for many of his associates who spoke openly about various killings and shootings, Linda was privy to much inside information. On more than one occasion she found herself pleading with her father to spare the lives of certain men whom she knew and liked. Her story is riveting and, given her love for her father, could not have been an easy one to tell. To her credit, however, she recounts it in an honest, objective way, warts and all. I could go on and on about specific episodes in the book and what a terrific story this is, but I wouldn't want to ruin it for those of you out there who haven't read it yet. My only advice is, if you are interested in what really went on behind the scenes in the dual life of a mobster (devoted husband and father at home, stone-cold killer on the streets) then you won't be dissappointed in this narrative.

This is not a digital book. It is essentially a slide deck that runs through the obvious aspects of the 5 s'. I did not gain any valuable insight from the book. Check out Jason Tisbury's book as it is much more insightful.

A BEAUTIFUL AND COMPREHENSIVE REFERENCE BOOK!

I own tons of yoga books and this is one of my favorites.

The book begins with an introduction to yoga's historical roots, the concept of our three bodies and the path to inner peace. This is followed by 27 detailed asanas and a final relaxation. Every piece of information one would wonder about the pose is included; physical, mental and energetic benefits are detailed, as well as do's and don'ts. Each asana is accompanied by beautiful, detailed photographs and a section of common faults in pose performance.

Separate sections are included regarding Pranic benefits of yogic breathing, relaxation, vegetarian diet (with fabulous recipes) and meditation.

The oversized, soft back format, along with two sturdy inside cover flaps for quick bookmarking, make this book comfortable to read and handle. One of the very best all-round yoga books I have studied!

Great investment! A must have in your library

here are lots of big color pictures that explain the position. The book gives basic and advanced positions. It is fourteen years later since I ordered the book. I have used it and now my kids use it and just look through the book and start doing the poses.

liked yoga: your home practice companion better

I purchased yoga mind and body, yoga your home practice companion, and the sivananda companion to yoga. I have done yoga sporadically for 10 years, but wanted to start at the beginning because i've had three kids and that changes your body. I liked the yoga your home practice companion the best because its basically the same info as mind and body but the hardback lays flat and open in front of you and there are more pictures. The sivananda companion was too advanced for me.

finally, tools that make sense and really work

I'm tired of rehashing the past, looking for reasons that might be causing me problems now, so when I heard some of Kimberly Giles' tools for looking at myself, others and the world around me, I knew right away that they resonated with me. I bought her book and discovered tools that helped immediately. Each chapter addresses a core human issue and then gives an example of how to think about it in a healthy, authentic way.

Now that I understand the basic fears that drive most behaviors, I can step back from a painful situation and respond with kindness. This book taught me, among other things, that I have value and criticism from others doesn't change that value. Pain is inevitable in this life, but I now have a way to move forward in a healthy and meaningful way. I have learned to let go of some of my fears and I already feel a significant change in my relationships.

Super concepts; moderately well written

Kim has a knack for breaking down the personal problems that face all of us and creating a real pathway to move through them. This is a great read for anyone dealing with anxiety, fear, or personal doubt.

The book format feels like it was copied from a dozen other self help books and the writing is a bit amateur. But give Kim some time and some editorial support and she is going to go far.

In 10 years I think Kim will be a household name in many circles.

Great Book

Last year I found Kimberly Giles' advice column in our paper. And what she said just made sense. I went to her websites and saw that she was coming out with a book. I signed up to be notified once it was published. I love her perspective. She speaks truth. Through assignments in the book, she teaches me how to take responsibility but through love. To love myself, and to see others with love. She has taught me that other people's bad behavior is a result of their insecurities and that empowers me to be more patient. I recommend this book to everyone and anyone. Through her coaching, I am becoming more confident and recognizing my choice through daily decisions.
