Lessing has been prolific for decades, writing diverse novels, short stories, plays, nonfiction, and autobiographies. She is also a superb essayist: lucid, wise, knowledgeable, and witty. Lessing on Your Mind

I am old enough to remember a time when every self-respecting woman had a copy of the "Golden Notebooks" on her shelf. I am not sure that books are important to today's hip woman, but I have been a life long reader of hers, and she continues in her 80s to be a great humanitarian if not quite the great writer she used to be. "Time Bites" which could just as well be called "tidbits" is not much in the way of a book. These are not even proper essays really, certainly not prize winners, but they are 'occasional pieces' which is a respectable genre in itself. She writes appreciations of writers such as D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf, she addresses what she calls the stupidity of political correctness which, correctly, she says has destroyed American universities, she reminds us of the insanity of the American left, but also of the lunatic right, she speaks in her old age of moderation, shares her love of animals, and speaks yet again to the tragedy of Zimbabwe, her former home country. The voice of sanity is rare these days, so I highly recommend this collection, which includes dozens of short, probing, gently critical pieces. Lessing, one feels, cares far more about the world than about herself. How's that for a recommendation?

Decent, sensible, clear but without poetic fire or humor

This collection of small essays reveals to us the world of Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing. Lessing is an extremely serious writer , one with a strong moral sense. She writes here about a number of her fellow writers, D.H.Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, A.C.Coppard, Bulgakov, George Meredith, Olive Schreiner, Tolstoy- about the writer who has meant the most to her Idries Shah, and the religious philosophy he espouses, Sufism- about animals, especially cats, about being young and being old, about the changes she has seen in writers mentality and motivation in her lifetime, about Education , about the tragedy of Zimbabwe,about Opera and her connection with the composer Philip Glass, about the difference between writing fiction and writing autobiography, about the satisfaction of knowing her book 'The Golden Notebook' has been read and enjoyed by so many people in so many different places. She also writes an essay about the wisdom of 'Ecclesiastes'. She writes of its prose. "From the very first verse of Ecclesiastes you are carried along on a running tide of sound, incantantory, almost hypnotic , and it is easy to imagine yourself sitting among this man's pupils, listeningt them..... Your ears are entranced , but at the same time you are very much alert."
I would say of this collection on the whole that there are spots in it in which the reader will be made very alert and feel that they have truly learned and enjoyed. But that there is not real inspiration or fire or humor in it. A decent work.

one to buy

I recently got this book out of the library and had time to read only a few of the essays. I was going to renew it ,but instead am buying it because I found what she had to say so profoundly true, that I had to own it. I am going to have all of my American friends and family read "The Wrong Way Home"--she speaks to the idea of terrorism and cult thinking and how to defeat it with books and education worldwide.

Some of the essays are short but provacative. She covers so many subjects and mentions so many writers that I've never heard of that I think I will have to write them down to read later. I've read many of her other books, The Canopus in Argus Series, Mara and Dan, The Good Terrorist, The Fifth Child, to name a few--they are all so different, and she never fails to take me away to that other place I go to in a good book. And I love that she has an affinity for cats. She is so wise, and so funny sometimes....I'd like to take her to lunch.

Best ever!

Best ever!!!! Thorough, complete, straight to the point without fluff. Nothing like it anywhere! The computer educational protocols for hospitals don't even come close to what is in this book. This book helped a couple of my friends and I pass clinical and the NCLEX-RN back in the day. I still use it as a reference in everyday practice and each edition just gets better and better. Also, it arrived very quickly in perfect condition every time!

Is it really over for Justin and Kayla ???

I've Loveland all these books but I was really worried that this would be it for Justin and Kayla. It all looked so bad and somebody really had it out for them! I have my suspicions! Poor Justin has feelings of inferiority in regards to Kayla and scant believe she would really love him. Then when he got the text on her phone supposedly from her best friend implying that Kay got pregnant just to trap him, he feels so betrayed. He rushes away, and basically leaves town. Kayla is left alone to host Justin's birthday party and face all the gossip. She saves him again in Rno boot leaves him and goes back to her apartment alone. It's all up to Justin now. What will he do? Divorce her? End the arrangement? Give up?

What did I like? I really enjoy this, it was a quick read and each of the books thereafter was the same. I was lucky and was able to read them all one after the other and not have to wait till the next one came out. They were romantic stories full of humor, laughs, secrets, mysteries, and poignancy. The characters were fantastic and quirky with that romantic twist. Each story being a stepping stone to the final book and really should be read as I did (one after the other).

What will you like? As I said quick reads with the modern twist on the old fashion romances. Updated to the lifestyles of today and yet with that old fashion thing in it called LOVE! Even though these are novellas they are well developed and you can see the work of the author’s research. I think you will fall in love with each of the characters and will be caught up in the storyline. You will enjoy each book with all the twists and unexpected turns. The rich part of the books is how all the characters interact through the series with the big finale in the last book. When Justin is hospitalized, Kayla returns to Seattle leaving the fate of their marriage in Justin’s hands. Will Justin find understanding and return to Kayla, their child and their new found love? Or will he decide he has had enough and continue with the divorce? As I read I just couldn’t wait to get to the next book, but wait is there another one? I am looking forward to maybe seeing this couple brought up in other books so we can see how they are. Hint, Hint!

Great Ending to Fun Series!

I was so excited to read the final installment of the Switched at Marriage series. I have really enjoyed all of the books in this series, and couldn't wait to find out how everything would work out between Justin and Kayla. The previous book left us with a cliffhanger, and I was eager to find out how Justin would deal with what appeared to be Kayla's infidelity with his good friend Lazer. My heart broke for him, because he really believed she was cheating.

I was also very interested in finding out how they were going to deal with Kayla's imposter, and I'm glad that there was closure on that whole situation.

I feel like the series was very well written, and held my attention. I connected with the characters, too. The books are quick, witty, romantic, and a lot of fun!

Although a barrel of oil from any source may look the same, “tight oil” and oil from tar sands require much higher prices to be profitable for the producer; these expensive sources have very different economic implications from the conventional oil supplies that underpinned economic growth for most of the 20th century. The role of oil in the global economy is not easily changed. Since currently installed infrastructure assumes oil, a change implies more than just substitution of an energy source. The speed with which such basic structural changes can be made is also constrained, and ultimately themselves dependent on fossil fuel inputs. It remains unclear how this scenario will evolve, and that uncertainty adds additional economic pressure to the investment decisions that must be made. “Drill baby drill” and new pipeline projects may be attractive politically, but projections of economic and associated oil production growth based on past performance are clearly untenable.

Fresh from his university training as a geologist, Sam Carmalt joined a major oil company at the height of the gasoline shortages of the 1970s. His goal was to help find more of the oil that society needs. But he discovered that his employer’s interest was somewhat different -- to make a good financial return. Since then, as an employee, with a major industry consultancy, and as an independent consultant Sam has investigated the interface between energy and the economy. As these relationships undergo significant changes, he provides important insights into how the oil needed for our economy is found and paid for.
