About the Author

Eugenia Hepworth Berger became interested in parent involvement when she and her husband, Glen, became the parents of three children who attended public schools. A professional in early childhood education, sociology, family life education, and parent education for more than 35 years, she has two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in sociological foundations of education. Eugenia has been active in many professional organizations, including the Association for Childhood Education International, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (life member), and the National Council for the Social Studies. She served on the board for the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators, the Colorado Association for Childhood Education, the Colorado Association for the Education of Young Children, and was president of the Rocky Mountain Council on Family Relations. After finishing her doctorate at the University of Denver, she became a faculty member at Metropolitan State College. She retired in December 1997 and is now professor emerita of education.

Mari Riojas-Cortez, Ph.D. is Chair and Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in bilingual education and early childhood education from the University of Texas at Austin. Her interest in family involvement began when she was a bilingual prekindergarten teacher at a public school district in San Antonio. Families were always very involved in her classroom in different ways and the influence on their children was noted in the way children excelled in school. Dr. Cortez realized early in her career that the success of young children came from families, even those who faced many challenges as long as they invested time working with them. Dr. Cortez research expertise includes Latino family involvement, children’s play in school settings, and classroom ecology. Dr. Cortez has published in major early childhood journals including Young Children, International Journal of Early Childhood, Early Childhood Education Journal, Advances in Early Education and Day Care, and Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, among others. Currently, she is the editor for Dimensions a journal of the Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA).

Only Swick's Book Is Better.

This book has everything from parent involvement to parent teacher conferencing to the very best history of parent education/involvement that I have EVER seen.

If you can't find any book by Kevin Swick, then get this one. Heck! Get 'em both! You can never do with enough ways to get parents involved with children during the early years.

needed this for a class

I bought this book for a class and thought it would be one that would be relevant to my work with parents. There is only so much that can be said and then there is repetition or information that is far from necessary. I was assigned chapter 10, "working with parents of children with disabilities". Of the 42 pages 26 talked about the history and laws of special education. There was not really anything useful in the chapter that gave specific advise on working with parents. Some of the other chapters were child abuse and home schooling. Not at all what I expected.

at last a non dogmatic book

In contrast to other textbooks, the book of Hammond is based on the assumption that the most appropriate way to teach is to follow the path that enabled to develop a concept and prove it. The book thus includes over 400 figures of now classical experiments with a concise explanation of the hypothesis, the experimental design used to test the hypothesis and the conclusions derived. The student gets rapidly familiar with channels, basic networks and functions thanks to brief addenda in which complicated experiments with patch clamp techniques become quite straightforward. The molecular and cellular elements required to understand how ionic channels operate during maturation and in relation to sensory perception or learning are presented in an excellent English and includes several chapters by leading experts in their respective fields. The quality of the figures facilitates direct use for teaching neurobiology.

Buy this book if you're a history major, otherwise it's a waste of time.

I'm currently writing this review as a means of procrastination for an upcoming final in a course that holds this text as assigned reading. The only reason I'm online at all is I was searching everywhere for a hint of what exists in the supposed appendix 11.1, mentioned on pg.341 of this edition, but nowhere to be found apparently (not on the academic press website, and definitely not in the book itself!) The appendix is referenced with those inquisitive readers (as I see mentioned in another review on this page) in mind... the readers who want research to support ridiculous hypotheses so that they too can form their own conclusions. This is only one example of missing items referred to in the text. Overall, it is very poorly written (great if you consider the fact that a foreigner wrote it, but terrible for native english speakers). At one point, the english word chosen was so far removed from that intended that I had to consult French speakers to confirm my suspicion of the simple translational mistake. The figures are probably the worst feature of this text (in comparison to how applauded they are in every review i come across). They are filled with mistakes, often lacking vital conceptual info, and sometimes simply idiotic. Any highly descriptive textbook (especially newly released ones of course) would put the student light-years ahead of their classmates who made the poor decision of buying this terrible book. I never write reviews, and I am very good at biology, so take my advice. I write this in pure disgust that the author was permitted to publish this text, much less teach in the field.

Pretty good quick handbook, but not as thorough as pocket Barash.

This book is to the point and has just the stuff you need. It's easy to read and a great resource to read through. I have noticed that it doesn't talk about a number of things, such as EKG, but I understand that this is a concise reference and they aren't trying to cover EVERYTHING. Because it doesn't cover everything, it isn't my #1 quick handbook resource (pocket Barash), but it is very handy. The sections aren't always very intuitive either, so sometimes I flip around for a while trying to find details topics that for some reason aren't in the index.
Overall, I would recommend it. It is a great resource for quick facts, but you will sometimes come across questions where this book doesn't have the answer.

Going into anesthesia for medical residency (I hope anyways :) ) . I really don't think there is one perfect book to get for rotations, but this little guy helped me answer almost all the pimp questions that didn't start with "I really don't expect you to know this, but...". This is a pretty easy read in a great format (question answer based).

He does use a H1 basic assembly code to teach students the flow of things in that langauge but when he begins to go and start using c++ and java simple programs and convert them to an Assembly-based langauge, things get a bit more confusing.

some revieweres might walk away beleiveing it is more academic exercise than useful new material to sink one's teeth into.

For example, he uses "ldi" a lot which according to the textbook it means "Indirect loading" and other "ldr and ldc " commands which ldr refers to what is going on the STACK, then things get complicated.

His Figures he uses are Ok, but require more labelling. The publisher alos does not help the readability of the book by spreading Figures well past where they are introduced by the author.

Furthermore, the end of chpater questions often do not get enough coverage int he text to answer the questions well enough. The answers should be given in the back of the book to help those students who need more assistance.

So let's say it's not a bad book for those wishing to get a fast start in learning the basic of Assembly langauge.

Badly written.

I'm a sucker for anything about Kubrick and his works. But be warned - IMHO this is one of the most atrociously written and edited books I've come across in some time. Reminds me of gasping in revulsion at what a horrible writer Dan Brown is. Plenty of editorial lapses, hardly proof-read it seems. The author redundantly states the same ideas over and over within the same paragraph. Even her quotes, from Kubrick and others, seem incredible - did Stanley actually express himself in such an inane manner? I'll go ahead and slog my way through this thing, hoping she has some interesting insights on Kubrick's major last films, but yow! she's giving me a headache!

Back when I was in first grade, I got the VHS tape of Ferngully and became obsessed with it. Now I'm in my early twenties and am just now discovering that it's based off of a book!? Where'd that come from!? Wow! Why hadn't I read this sooner! So I bought it, read it, loved it. Especially when I read about Pips and Crysta! Squee! So, ahem, anyways, buy this book and relive the magic with scenes you missed out on!

Then weird things start to happen, like Crysta shrinking a human, Zack, down to fairy size. Then things get weirder when Crysta and Zack get lost and everything gets poisoned. Can the fairies stop the Leveler? Can they defeat Hexis once and for all? Read on and you will find out.
