CSR attempts to provide answers to questions such as: Why it is that humans tend to be religious? And why are certain ideas (e.g. the possibility of an afterlife) so cross-culturally recurrent? Barrett also covers the indirect implications that cognitive science has for theology, such as human similarities and differences with the animal world, freedom and determinism, and the relationship between minds and bodies.

Burden of evidence

The primary reason I've given this a two star rating is not for the science presented. From what I know already of cognitive science Barrett presents the basics quite well. My problem was with the unsupportable efforts he made to give

I bought the Audible version of this book so I can't flip through pages and site specific examples by page or chapter, but early on Barrett rejects the idea that we should only believe things for which we have proof by treating it as an absolute and inflexible bar against believing anything, and goes on at the end of a later chapter to assert at great length that we can't reject beliefs in gods simply because they come from unconsidered assumptions and have no discernible basis in reality. He put the burden of evidence on proving that gods don't exist rather than waiting for any evidence to believe, even after detailing the flawed automatic assumptions that can lead to belief that some god or other supernatural agents exist. Towards the end of the book too, he holds forth on the likelihood of evolution based on his own personal incredulity. That was the part where I simply turned off the audio book. Maybe he backs down from attacking science with strong evidence in favor of someone's *feeling* that a god must exist but he had already thoroughly undermined his own credibility.

Brief First Hand Accout of the Titanic Rescue

Reason for Reading: I will be reading the non-fiction book about this woman's life and experience on the Titanic and thought this would be of historical interest as a pre-read.

This tiny booklet is interesting only because of its historical significance. If you are a completest in your Titanic readings then this will surely be of value to you. It really has no literary merit. Mrs. Caldwell's account is brief and concerns her time in the raft and onboard the rescue ship. She waxes poetic about the heroism of the women who survived saying it took much more bravery to carry on and live than it did to stay and go down with a husband. Of course, this is the English-speaking women as she sets aside the "foreign element" from the beginning. Mrs. Caldwell's account is melodramatic but is also historically engaging as it describes the sights and sounds from the raft and how the middle/upper class women fared after being rescued. One certainly wonders whether Mrs. Caldwell wrote her little booklet hoping to make some extra money for her family rather than from any sense of duty. Not that there's anything wrong with making money. Included is a foreword by the author of a non-fiction book on the Caldwell family, a relative, then a poem by "Beecher" followed by Mrs. Caldwell's account which includes both a picture of herself and one of her baby. Then comes a "Hymn for Survivors of the Titanic" by Hall Caine followed by the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee". Finally there is a brief "About the Author" which tells briefly about Sylvia Caldwell. All in all, I am thrilled this piece of history has been made available to the public and pleased to have read its contents.

Short but Powerful

I watched the latest episode of Antiques Roadshow on my DVR tonight, and this book showed up on it! I was intrigued! I never heard of the book and since I'm kinda obsessed with the titanic, I had to see if amazon had this rare Book on eBook form. They do and it was only 99cents too! I knew by the look of the book it was short because its a thin book.
If your looking for an in depth biography of the titanic this isn't for you. this is a short but I think powerful little book and I wasn't disappointed buying it. I've seen other reviewers giving it a poor score because it was only 19 pages and they just didn't "get" the book. This woman recounts what she heard on the titanic, in the life boats and water, and on the rescue ship. To hear what people where ACTUALLY saying and how this author experienced the whole scene and events around her made this such a compelling read! You're getting actual accounts of certain things said and felt. I would recommend this to anyone! its Short, Haunting, Gripping, and very compelling! The also have a short bio of the author in here, a hymn and a song last played on the titanic. if you what to read the real words spoken on that fateful day, read this book! To me that is worth spending money on to read it.... even if it was short. Great book!

The Best Croatian Course I Have Found!

My husband and I are planning a trip to Croatia this fall so I bought three different courses to learn the language. This course is BY FAR the best of the three. Of course, there are a few things that you need to remember. Croatian is a difficult language to learn because it is very different from English. Also, there are not a lot of good Croatian courses out there since Croatia is just starting to get tourists to visit.

Each chapter has a dialogue, some key phrases to learn, some grammar information, practice exercises (generally not on the tape, but written) and a comprehension passage. The tapes/CD's are of minimal use because they do not leave a pause for you to repeat. However, I just pause my recorder. It is necessary to use the tapes because it is important to hear the correct pronunciation. Speaking the language out loud (not just hearing it) is of utmost importance. The answers to the exercises are all in the back of the book and there is a comprehesive glossary at the back of the book. I know this doesn't sound like much, but one of the other courses does not provide this luxury!!!

I have a couple of negative things to report about the program as well. As I mentioned, there are not pauses on the recordings. Also, there are not translations of the dialogues. There are definitions of new words and phrases below the dialogues, but previously learned words are not listed. Therefore, if you have forgotten anything it is frustrating. I have written the translations in my book. A needless headache!

Although there are some less-than-perfect aspects to this course, it is definitely the best bet if you want to buy an inexpensive complete course for learning Croatian. Give yourself some time to master each chapter before moving on to the next one and be patient with yourself! Learning a language is rewarding, but never easy!

Short, sweet and thorough!!

My husband and I have studied a lot of foreign languages. We found Teach Yourself Croatian to be one of the best organized texts we have seen. It was excellent for getting the "big-picture" structure as well as the details of grammar and vocabulary. We were at an advantage in that we had studied other Slavic languages before taking on Croatian. The text might be difficult for those without prior knowledge of another Slavic language and a firm grounding in Latin-based grammatical structure. Our main complaint: The CD's did not contain enough exercises nor did they leave space for us to practice. Nevertheless, it served us well in that the Croatians we encountered were impressed with our efforts to learn their language.

Good Overall Beginner's Course in Croatian

I just started learning Croatian recently and began this book with absolutely no background in the language. I'm not even half way through the course right now and yet have been introduced to enough vocabulary, verb conjugation, declension and sentence structure to be able to have some basic conversations in the Croatian language. The added audio is also very helpful for hearing naturally-spoken Croatian by native Croatian speakers. This is not an easy language for a native English speaker to learn by any means, but I feel this course is providing me with a solid foundation for everyday conversational Croatian and I look forward to making my way through future lessons.

very disappointed in this expensive book

This book is for the academic,not for the trader who is looking for a practical workable solution to the Elliot Wave. I am getting the feeling the author wants to boast about his knowledge on elliot wave theory and more so wants to re- invent the concept.I am very, very disappointed in this expensive book. There are hundreds of much better sources out there to help you not only to understand elliot wave , but the application of this theory. the only reason i give this book one star is because there is no option for a zero rating. Make no mistake if you want to become a reservoir of knowledge on elliot wave and have no interest in applying the theory in trading, then this book might be a good choice. Other than that, do not waste a dime on this book.

This is not a novel about some character named "Elliott".....

it IS, however, a major treatise on the Elliott Wave theory, probably the first and only one like this that has ever been written. It is a very good book on a subject that few financial people know - or even care - about, but would or should learn. No, it will not make you a imillion dollars; it WILL help you make better decisions about where a particular stock is going and how soon but it will also take a very long time to digest. This is a book that you read a few pages and then put the book down and spend the next few hours or days digesting what you've read, even going to the charts looking for examples of what you've just read. Robert Prechter wrote a few good books on this subject and this book by Neely is an excellent supplement. I think it's fair to say that books dealing with theories associated with the financial world are very dry and very boring to people who just aren't into the finacial world, and sometimes even more boring to those of us who ARE hooked on the world of finances, securities, and the stock market but be that as it may, if you are deeply into the markets, this is a good one to have on your shelf along side of Robert Prechter's book.

A Masterpiece but could be better organized

A superb treatise of practical application of Elliott wave behavior, but one has to do a lot of traveling back and forth for certain rule applications. For example, there is quite a lot of information about different kinds of patterns, but it is scattered across many chapters.Also if Neely had included real life examples of actual markets it would have been even better.The chapter on the first set of rules could have been made a little more user friendly.
All in all, an essential book for every aspiring market technician and theorist alike.

best book for teaching reading ever

my son had difficulty learning to read... after the school system failed, i tried several home study programs with no success... after 2 weeks with this book he was reading fairly fluently and now reads well in spite of his disability... what a wonderful blessing this was for his education and his life... i highly highly recommend it!

Teaching with the spirit is powerful

This book uses many methods of teaching while using the spirit to teach the child. I have used this book to teach 2 of my children to read. I am so happy to have another copy!! This is a book worth keeping on the shelf and sharing with others as there is a need. It is my understanding that it is out of print, and that is very unfortunate.

Both my kids are reading way above the normal level in their classes after using this manual. It was very helpful. I especially like the method of blending phonics instead of separated sounds like I was taught.
