Should delight any bibliophile

This is a delightful book written in the early 1900's. The story is light-hearted and sentimental by today's standards, but it is a joy to read. It accurately captures an earlier time of this century when much of the population was isolated, and travel by wagon was the norm. It is enjoyable also for the small details of daily life, such as the references to gas lamps and the types of food eaten then. Some of the references are dated, but the thoughts on books and bookselling are as timely as ever. In fact, the last order I received from Amazon contained a bookmark that had a quote from this very book! The book is apparently hard to obtain; I was lucky enough to find it in our city library. And the best news is that the sequel, The Haunted Bookshop, is much better than this volume. So if you aren't totally captivated by Parnassus on Wheels, but like it somewhat, don't pass up the sequel.

For booklovers and romantics

Do you love books and learning? Do you delight in spending the afternoon browsing the stacks at the library? Are you in the mood for something light, amusing, captivating, and utterly delightful? Do you believe in true love, somehow, someway? If you said yes to most of these questions, then read Parnassus on Wheels. This is the most delightful and charming book I've come across in years. It brought tears to my eyes and made me laugh, and that doesn't happen often when I'm reading a book. In fact, I wish I had my own Parnassus and that I could travel the countryside selling books.
By the way, it's a page turner too! A great gift idea for a friend that loves to read. Enjoy.

A charming (and quick) read

Christopher Morley's protagonist and narrator, a self-described forty-ish fat New England housewife, finds passion and adventure when Roger Mifflin, an itinerant bookseller, enters her life.

Originally published in 1917, the book reads quickly and leaves one satisfied. It is a charming portrait of a bygone era, and yet it captures those things which are eternal -- the love of learning, the power of human feeling, and the irresistible bond of kindred spirits.

About the Author
Robert Osborne is host of Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and serves as the official host for the TCM Classic Film Festival and the TCM Classic Cruise. For over 25 years, Osborne served as a reporter and columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, one of the industry’s most important newspapers. He has written a dozen books on the film world, many of them focused on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and has frequently served as host of the Academy’s in-person tributes, in both Beverly Hills and New York. Osborne earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006 and in 2008, received a special award from the National Board of Review for his contributions as a film historian.

Simply the BEST book anywhere about the Academy Awards

Yes, Osborne's book is expensive, but I buy it every five years when a new edition is published. And, the Amazon.com price is a REAL BARGAIN. No other book even comes remotely close to the authenticity of this exceptionally thorough volume. I have noticed that other books about the Academy Awards either contain outright false information or skip significant categories, nominees, and winners. Osborne includes every conceivable fact about the entire 85 years of the Oscars. The side bar commentaries from winners are fascinating and insightful. The vintage photographs and movie posters are likewise bonus features. This brand new edition is a treasure for people who love great films and are cinema history fans.

Love this new edition - a must-have for Oscar fans

I've been collecting these books for many years. It's a must-have for Academy Awards fans. I love that there are more color photos in this new edition. I like that they used photos representing other categories besides just the acting winners, and added more behind-the-scenes shots - it seems like a more thoughtful approach than some of the earlier editions. It's jam-packed with information and very heavy; must weigh at least 5 or 6 lbs. Kind of an "old school" book for sure but a nice collector's item nonetheless. The very best part, in my opinion, is the dozens of anecdotes from winners sprinkled throughout the book.

Great series; unfortunate format change in this edition

This has been a great series; the only reason I give the latest edition four stars instead of five is that they have gone back and changed many of the photos that accompany each year's awards, and for the first time they have left out many of the acting award winners. Most recently, both Mo'Nique and Christoph Waltz were not pictured for the year they both won. As unhappy as I am with that, I won't downgrade the rating too much - it's still a book any Oscar hound will have to have.

Some interesting projects, but not a good place for the beginner to start.

A number of interesting projects here, but as a "starter guide" it leaves a bit to be desired There's just not enough on the basics- how to make different cuts, how to control the blade, characteristics of different woods, choosing wood, and a lot more that the beginner needs to know. One of the projects requires woodturning tools. This is not a book conceived from scratch but a collection of articles from Woodcarving Illustrated. What there is, is good, but the beginner needs a lot that isn't here.

Great book but probably not a true beginners guide. Maybe I wasn't purchasing for the right audience though. My nephew loves carving things with his knife. The directions and words used were way above his head though.

The chapters focus on occupational safety and consumer issues and examine the circumstances under which exposure is likely to occur.

About the Author
Since 1984 Dr. Kevin Woodward's experience has been centred on all aspects of the evaluation and regulation of veterinary drugs, particularly from the point of view of safety evaluation, toxicology, user risk assessment and pharmacovigilance. He was a member of the Committee for Veterinary Medicinal Products (CVMP) until August 1996 and Chairman of its Safety of Residues Working Group from 1991 until 1996. He was a member of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and an invited expert to the Committee for the years 1988-1996. He has also been leader of the UK delegation to the Codex Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Food from 1993 to 1996. From September 1997 until September 1999, and again from 1999 until November 2001, he chaired IFAH-Europe's (formerly FEDESA's) Technical and Regulatory Committee and was elected to the Board of Directors of FEDESA in February 2002 and to the Board of Directors of NOAH (ex-officio), also in February 2002. Since 2008, he has been the Regulatory Officer for the EAVPT.

Management consultant Miller argues that there are seven archetypal management styles, directly linked to the stages of an organization's development. A company is formed by a "prophet," whose vision is actually implemented by a efficient "barbarian." A sign of the company's decline is the hindering presence of a "bureaucrat" or "aristocrat." The innovative twist to Miller's thesis is his "synergist" archetype, the manager who is able to balance these archetypal traits to assure vitality and growth. While all of this is quite interesting, one gets the impression that Miller sees organizational culture as more malleable and dynamic than it historically has been shown to be. Terence E. Deal and Allan A. Kennedy's Corporate Cultures ( LJ 7/82) still remains the most insightful, recently published work on this topic.

Barbarians to Bureaucrats provides an insightful view of managerial styles but what's more significant is its emphasis on Synergist and the importance of his leadership to the success of his company. The author states "All cultures that succeed do so because of synergy, both within the culture and in interaction with competing cultures. Healthy companies are flexible. That allows them to change. Rigidity prevents change and inevitably leads to decline." Synergistic organizations require unique differences in its leadership team and these differences provide flexibility, creativity, motivation, unity and diversity, as well as other attributes, which follow the Laws of Synergy. I recommend this book as a great guide to the understanding the requirements to a successful enterprise

I first read this book 20 years ago; it was relevant then and it still is today. Miller uses his history background to bring examples of past civilizations that have followed the model interlaced with modern day companies that have done the same. It is a book that every manager and executive should be familiar with in the hope that, armed with Miller's insights, they may be able to help stave off the inevitable progression to aristocracy.

Nice introduction

This is an enjoyable little volume in the Oxford Introductions to Language Studies series. Roach begins with an overview and then directs our attention to the production of speech sounds and the creation of vowels, consonants, and tones. He also covers suprasegmentals, acoustics, and the use of sounds to compliment one another in the creation of meaning.

My only complaint with this book is its emphasis on the BBC accent. This alienates those who are unfamiliar with this accent or those from other areas who are concerned rather with their own accent. This critique could be broadened to include most of this Oxford series so this criticism is not particular to Roach.

As the author explains in the Preface, the book is intended to serve both the statistician who knows very little about DNA microarrays and the biologist who has no expertise in data analysis. The author lays out a study plan for the statistician that excludes 5 of the 17 chapters (4-8). These chapters present the basics of statistical distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, ANOVA, and experimental design. What that leaves for the statistician is the three-chapter primer on microarrays and image processing, plus all of the data analysis tools specific to the microarray situation. …�it includes two CDs with trial versions of several specialised software packages. Anyone who uses microarray data should certainly own a copy.

He argues that any effective treatment for battered women must help unravel futile and self-defeating patterns, such as ones that spring from fears of abandonment and fascination with men who produce exaggerated promises of love followed by extreme rejecting behaviors.

The Illusion of Love examines the personalities of abusers as well, many of whom suffer from narcissism, a disorder that is also often associated with childhood abuse and neglect. Narcissistic men lash out violently in an attempt to control their own fears or abandonment and to compensate for unsatisfied emotional needs.

Celani concludes that domestic violence is often the tragic result of a union between individuals with complementary personality disorders. His findings fly in the face of the politically correct refusal to examine the behavior of the victim of abuse, a strategy that has led to a severe misunderstanding of the dynamics of the battering scenario. The Illusion of Love calls for primary prevention of neglectful parenting to stem the tide of abuse in the future, offering tangible hope for the treatment of victims of abuse as they attempt to extricate themselves from unhealthy, damaging relationships.

an insightful view of destructive relationships

The author provides a foundational understanding of the psychodynamics and cyclic nature of abusive relationships. Celani explains how adult relations are unconscious repetitions of early childhood 'object relations'. He also compares his theories to those of other researchers and addresses practical methods for helping the victims. He is apparently passionate about the subject, making the book lively and approachable for lay persons as well as for psychotherapists.

Why do Women Stay?

If you have been abused or you work with people who are being abused (that accounts for 85% of the US) read this book. It's not obvious, even to victims, why they can't just walk away. Since typically the abuser is male and victim is a female I was impressed that this compassionate book on the subject was written by a male. A classic in the subject of abuse.
