Richard B. Chase is Director of the Center for Operations Management Research and Education at USC. He is widely published in both books and academic journals and is considered one of the top service "gurus" in the field. He is on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Operations Management, an Advisor to Production and Operations Management journal, and a Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute.

F. Robert Jacobs is Chase Faculty Fellow Professor of Operations Management at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. He received a B.S. in Industrial Engineering as well as Computer and Information Science, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in Operations Management all from The Ohio State University.

Very interesting

I never used to be a fan of fantasy, but I am now. Mykals' book was great - full of action and romance, with a straightforward story line that progressed well and didn't disappoint. I hope that the ending foreshadows a sequel!

A pleasant surprise!

I found this book a pleasant surprise. I was expecting something written in ancient Greek times but instead I got a novel about modern life on an alternate earth in which Atlantis survived the great flood. There was no 'sinking' of Atlantis as such. It overcame the odds and become one of the most powerful nations on earth today. Atlantis is a powerful monarchy government and runs the country pretty much with no general elections, although people are voted into advisory positions to help advise the nobles on various matters of importance.

But modern day Atlantis isn't perfect, trouble brews in the form of terrorists who are trying to overthrow the current government... why or what for wasn't really entirely made clear to me, perhaps in a sequel? Although this novel really does stand alone the ending certainly could promise more. One point to note is that the American govt just wasn't portrayed that nicely, so if you are an American you may find the American links and general suspicion of American policy etc annoys you but I'm Australian so I had no personal feelings about that one way or another.

Our two main characters are Evelynee (the Crown Princess) and Alleandre (ordinary, everyday Ally, who by the way has powerful physic powers). Ally literally bowls Ally over on their first meeting, by crashing tackling her thus saving her from an assassins bullet. Evelynne is mostly fine however Ally is not and is admitted to hospital in a serious condition. Evelynne is deeply shocked at meeting fragile looking Ally who saved her life at nearly the cost of her own. When Ally is ok to travel Evelynee persuades her to return with her to Atlantis to recover.

Evelynee is everything Ally is not... beautiful, confident and assured of her place in the world. Ally believes that she is ugly and was traumatised at a young age and is afraid that people will laugh and jeer at her. Even though she has strong physic powers her confidence in herself is next to non existent. The emotional ties that begin to bind these two remarkable women is brought to life easily and wonderfully for a first written novel. We travel the journey with them; the way they start off as strangers and quickly become friends then more is woven skillfully throughout the novel. The novel is a mixture of romance and suspense and I felt the two subjects were handled very well together. For a first novel I found it well written with plenty of descriptive language, not overwhelming at all but good enough to describe feelings, thoughts and surroundings, the ending could've perhaps been more but other than that, well done. I am sure that as the Alex (the author) hones her craft we will see more from her in the not too distant future. Try this novel I hope you won't be disappointed, I wasn't.

Fun in the Future

It's no secret to anyone who has read my reviews - I don't generally like science fiction books. However, I could not easily pass up this wonderful story by Alex Mykals. I believe this is her only published novel, but hope she delivers more in the future.

Speaking of the future, that's where this one is set, but it almost seems to also be set in the past. Mykals brings us Evelynne de Molay, heir to the throne of Atlantis. Due to the expectations of her position, Evelynne is in the proverbial closet. That is, until she meets and falls in love with the supernaturally talented Ally Tretiak - after Ally saves her from an assassin's bullet. Not only is Ally a foreigner, she is also a woman - both traits that make her an unsuitable partner for Evelynne.

As Ally begins to build a new life on Atlantis and continues to earn the attentions of the princess, she becomes a better candidate for the princess' affections - except she's still a woman. The only question is... can this be overcome?

This book took a lot of imagination on the author's part. She does such a nice job telling the story, that even the seemingly outrageous parts are believable. As a reader, I felt things fit together really well; she does a nice job bringing together futuristic technology with knights, social classes, and battle. I would certainly recommend this to anyone with an imagination.

Interesting and partially fabricated

Vanity got the best of me, so I bought it. While flattered by how much ink I got, the distortions and outright fabrication of events attributed to me make me question how much else Mr. Ling constructed. An example: "Todd Fisher: “I sometimes had the job of rounding up females. It was never too difficult. A few calls to the local university would produce a deluge of young women ready to party with a group of young men equally up for the occasion.”

Absolutely fabricated! Hell, I had enough trouble finding a lady for myself, let alone a whole band. Ling must have been on the crack pipe when he wrote THIS. There NEVER was a "procurer" for the band. We were each on his own. Ling aparently extracted many anectdotes that I wrote over 14 years ago for forums and chat groups on the web. You can search the web for "Uriah Heep Todd Fisher" and read the original stories, then compare to what Ling offers up here.

Mr. Ling's credibility took a major dive from my perspective. Still, despite the "creative license" he takes, the overall story is good, albeit fiction in many senses. Worth the three bucks, but not more. -Thomas "Todd" Fischer

Good but hardly intensive

If anyone wants to do a history of a band with as much longevity as Uriah Heep, one should be prepared to cover a lot of complex ground. While I enjoyed the book, I was disappointed at the lack of depth overall. I think a major revision would be worthwhile, not only to bring the work up to date, but also to get more into the inner workings of the band itself.

It is certainly worth a gander if you are a Heep fan as the price is right, but I was just hoping for something more.

Uriah Heep lives!

Honestly bought this for the price but was pleasantly surprised. Loved heep in the 70's but had not listened since Byron days. Book inspired me to listen to their newer music and even bought their last 3 CDs. Bernie Shaw is amazing and Heep is stronger than ever.

Well-written Chronology of the Automobile

"The Automobile Age" is a complete, authoritative book about the cultural and historical aspects of the automobile. Fascinating and richly detailed, it details the most important and influential invention of the nineteenth century, besides the telephone, and its impact on everyday life. There are 20 chapters plus an epilogue, "The Future of the Automobile" in this indexed work, full of illustrations that take a logical flow of direction. It begins with "The Automotive Idea," giving the reader a knowledgeable base with which to understand that the automobile was not the creation of just one person, but of many brilliant minds over the past few centuries. It is almost hard to imagine the extent that the automobile has undergone to arrive in its present state, a hybrid of early chariots, bicycles and, believe it or not, simple tools. Despite what the car hater may think, Flink points out that, regardless of the minority opinion the development of the automobile was a requirement. It had to happen. Basically the development of the car was a collective effort with no other ultimate expression. From Chapter 3, "The Emerging Industry" and Chapter 4, "Fordism", on through "Hard Times" in Chapter 11--citing the impact of the Great Depression on the automotive industry--and on to Chapter 17, "Japan as Number One," the book is difficult to set aside as it educate about how foreign markets began to take over in the 1960's and 1970's what was thought to be a singularly American creation.

"The Automobile Age" is a must-read for any automotive mechanic or driving school instructor. There is far too much information to be absorbed in a single reading, and is best read in sections. This book is an education in itself, and the price is far less than even a single college credit.

A Definitive Source

I am not an automobile enthusiast. In fact, until I read this book I was somewhat of an unenthusiast, but I loved this book. It is scholarly and authoritative without being cumbersome or boring. I have taken oral histories of older people who told me how much the automobile changed their lives, but this book gave me a tremendous understanding as to how and why the automobile not only changed our lives, but helped to define our role in the world. Flink does not leave out anything of importance, covering the themes of culture, the world wars, the international competition, and all the important individuals. He de-mythed some of the misconceptions I had (about Henry Ford's various roles, for example), and truly explains how the automobile industry got to where it is today. The only drawback at all about this book is that it was written to include information up until 1985, so is not entirely up to the current day. Nevertheless, the reader can use this book as the Bible of car history. A very enlightening volume.

The only reference Guide to American Clipper Ships available

This excellent reference guide originally published by the Marine Research Society in Salem, Mass. in 1926-27, actually consists of two Volumes:
Vol 1: Adelaide-Lotus: ISBN: 0486251152
Vol 2: Malay-Young Mechanic: ISBN: 0486251160
Volume 1 covers all American Clipper Ships built from 1833-1858 whose names begin with the letters A through L, and Volume 2 covers from M through Y. I don't know why they are offered separately, as Volume 1 also contains the introduction and Volume 2 the Index, so it makes no sense to purchase these separately. Also the pagination is consecutive. The brief introduction explains the criteria used to define a Clipper Ship, which is a ship "...of peculiar construction, designed for great speed rather than for capacity." (p.v) The authors Octavius T. Howe and Frederick C. Matthews consider the "Ann McKim" launched at Baltimore in 1833 to be the first Clipper, and the era of the Clipper to be over by 1858 with the launching of "The Star of Peace" at Newburyport. The books are basically listings of all 352 known Clipper Ships arranged alphabetically. Some entries are brief; others however are quite lengthy and include excerpts of contemporary descriptions in the Press and in Correspondence. It seems that the Sailing Records of Ships were of great interest to the authors, so the records of the fastest voyages on several routes can be found in these books. The Index includes not only the names of Ships, but also of Captains, Owners and Builders. Also included are reproductions of about 100 paintings and some drawings. These have not fared so well in the reprint edition, and their quality is sometimes not so good, but many are still helpful. This almost 800 page long book can be used as a reference book, or as a book just to page around. Original editions are quite hard to come by and expensive, so this reprint edition is very reasonably priced and a welcome addition to any Bookshelf of Maritime History.

What research the authors made in this and it's companion volume!!If you love the Clippers get these,they are detailed with the history of each ship,speed and anything pertinent to each of them. with many pix to boot.Two volumes,remember.

Older printed edtions far superior to the new "photocopied" reproductions.

The two volume set is wonderful for maritime/history buffs and model ship builders. Detailed specs for each ship are given and interesting stories of the ship's careers are included, often ending in shipwreck, giving readers some great insight into the hazards and adventures clipper ships and crews faced in that time period. Highly recommended.

The reason I only give it three stars is because earlier copies of these books were printed in Canada and in those editions the printing and black/white illustrations are very good. The new editions by DOVER publications are now "printed" in the USA and these are apparently photo copies with a decidedly worse sharpness to the print font and DISMAL reproductions of the clipper ship drawings. The "copied" version is only a FAIR reproduction at best and a poor substitute for an actual printing press. I highly recommend trying to purchase the older, used, Canadian copies which would rate the full five stars.
