Illuminated manuscripts collected by successive kings and queens of England form the heart of a unique and visually stunning collection held by the British Library. A key figure in the formation of this collection was King Edward IV (1461–83), who commissioned a number of luxury manuscripts decorated with his arms. About the Author

Scot McKendrick is head of history and classics at the British Library. He is the author of numerous publications on medieval and earlier manuscripts, including In a Monastery Library, Flemish Illuminated Manuscripts, and Illuminating the Renaissance. John Lowden is professor of art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. His numerous publications include The Making of the Bibles Moralis�es and Early Christion and Byzantine Art. Kathleen Doyle is curator of illuminated manuscripts at the British Library. Her previous publications include Bible Manuscripts.

memorable illuminated manuscripts

This catalog is a selection of illuminated manuscripts sourced principally from the gift to the British nation by George II in 1757 and held in the British Library. There are nearly 2000 manuscripts in this collection. Together with 9000 books donated from the same source these volumes form the "Old Royal Library". In the exhibition 111 volumes have been chosen with an additional 37 being sourced from other collections in the British Library. Entry 1 is an Insular Gospel Book (1st half of the 8th Century)and the last, Motets for Henry VIII, is dated at 1516. Many of the manuscripts are of European origin.

The manuscripts on display are generally of exceptional quality and in a very good state of preservation. Each is given a full page illustration and the color reproduction is of a high standard with good definition of the gold. This is a soft cover catalog and possibly slightly overpriced ($45). A highly recommended issue for enthusiasts of illustrated manuscripts nonetheless.

A Beautiful Book

This is a beautiful book for both those like myself who enjoy researching book and manuscript art, but also for those who want a stunning coffee-table book. It's a great overview of the Royal manuscripts dating from the 8th century through to Henry VIII in the 16th century, with wonderful snippets of information.

A wonderful book to browse at leisure. The illustrations and text of such are thoughtful and helpful. The full page reproductions are of good colour. I had hoped to see more in the way of progressive detail of the individual books from which the exhibition was derived. Alas, this is not the case. This being so, then the book is valuable as a catalogue with 'tasters' of the content. If it is a catalogue the reader wants, then the 25th Anniversary Edition of the Taschen book on Illuminated Manuscripts offers better value, with more pages for half the price. I much prefer the publisher Brazilier and the more complete texts such as Tres Riche Heures.

About the Author
Dan Abnett is a novelist and award-winning comic book writer. A bad dude

There's bad and there's badder...Malus Darkblade is the baddest of them all. This series is one of the more entertaining fantasy stories I've read fro a while. The author does a great job of telling the tale of Malus who has very simple needs basically kill his siblings, defy his mother and be the supreme ruler over all drows. There is a few minor snags such as his siblings would like to kill him, his mother is using him as a puppet to control a greater demon and the Witch King put out a contract on Malus' head. Interestingly, that's all the Witchking wants is Malus' head so being captured alive is not an option. The stories are well written and you'll sweat along with Malus as he works to get out of very bad situations. For a different pace, try reading some of these books.

Imagine Invader Zim, except as a Dark Elf.

I was struggling to describe what was so hilarious about Malus Darkblade to a friend of mine. Calling Malus paranoid, violent, belligerent, cruel and ruthless really don't capture him. Then it finally hit me. He's Invader Zim with an MA rating and a fantasy setting.

So yes, Malus starts off as a delightfully cruel sociopath. The very model of dark elf society. And he has some incredible schemes. One of the best parts of these novels are the mad schemes that fail, go to plan B, that fails too, onto plan C. And so on, and so forth until by some stubborn miracle Malus wins out. Sort of. Maybe not.

Along the way you meet some fantastic characters and Malus slowly begins to grow, mature, and realize his actions have consequences. In some ways, that sort of ruins the delightful sociopath he used to be. In other ways, it makes him a more relate-able character. I suppose that is just the trade off that must be made when dealing with a character as far out there as Malus.

The only downside to these novels? They are depressing. Horrifically so. Through at least 2/3rds of the narrative Malus is being beaten, tortured, abused, chased, hunted and conspired against. Which feeds into the double edged sword of making him relate-able. When he was this crazy alien creature, it was hilarious to watch these things happen. As he became more and more of a real person, with depth and feelings, you actually start to get worn out watching him suffer.

All in all though, I really enjoyed this view of the warhammer world. Seeing things from the Dark Elf perspective was certainly interesting and does a lot to flesh out the Warhammer fiction.

Fantastic Fantasy! Nonstop action and tons of violence and gore!

Phenomenal book, but not for everyone. I picked up the first book in the series and couldn't put it down. It is incredibly written, fast paced, and the characters are well developed. With that said, this is a dark, violent, gorry, and disturbing book. The black elves are the most base and violent characters in fantasy and their bloody lifestyles surprised and shocked me. Don't let that detere you from checking out this whole series. I was totally enthralled with the story line and wish the authors would continue the adventures of the main character. Just be aware that some of the scenes might be considered disturbing. It is a fantastic read and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes that kind of fantasy.

Target audience: raw beginners to exercise

The booklet is compact, made of quality materials, and the spiral binding is very handy so it can lie flat. It does seem very thorough for what it gives. I expected more, since there are over 600 muscles in the body.The fact there are far fewer pages should have been a clue. It does not list multiple muscles per page, or where it does, they are referenced as one.

If someone has absolutely no clue about how to stretch or exercise any muscles, then this book might be very handy for them.
Perhaps my expectations were too high. But I figured out nearly all the stretches in this book before I was 18, on my own.
The strengthening exercises are not much more complex. There are a few suggestions that would not normally occur to someone.

It might be an ideal book to require for high school or junior high school Physical Education classes, or an adult who has never done any exercise in their life.

This is a most excellent anatomy book. A friend recommended it to me. She used it as a textbook when she took anatomy classes at the professional school of massage. Clear pictures with detailed explanations that make understanding anatomy easy.

Grease Marks

Book is in ok condition. Only reason I say this is because it came in the package with some sort of food stuck to the bottom of it, as well as grease marks that were left from said food source. Some of the grease even leaked between the pages and has wrinkled the bottoms of it. Not all that pleased.

Anything you can get your hands on written by Louis Nizer totally rocks. You won't find a finer intellect writing honestly about the work of a practicing trial lawyer at the pinnacle of his craft, and writing passionately about the people and problems he encounters. And you'll learn some fascinating history lessons, such as a chapter here, the story behind the Andrews Sisters' hit, Rum and Coca-Cola.

That chapter is a WOW; especially the guilty, grim fascination when he goes through the nauseating details of a woman seeking a divorce from a podophiliac.

My usual complaint is too many names, almost all who would be unknowns to a modern audience. The reader doesn't have to be introduced to every appellate judge, executive secretary, and CPA in the world. I'd rather try to keep track of the major heroes and villains.

This is one book that clearly proves that lawyers are not made of the same stuff. Like other well-rounded men, Louis Nizer was more than a brilliant legal mind----a great storyteller (like Gerry Spence) with incredible analytical skills, a psychologist and observer of the human condition. I bought this book over 40 years ago and re-discovered it during a move with renewed interest. Intrigued with the case involving the copyrights to "Rum and Coca Cola," I began reading and could not stop. After reading this book (and ordering all others by him)I realize he represents what I would call the Universal Mind. His works, which he wrote nearing retirement into his nineties make fictional law books dull. His colorful stories detailing landmark cases (about 5 chapters) with famous people, are brilliantly re-told and punctuated with numerous quotes of his own; are more than an elemental introduction to the legal profession.They make you want to crawl in front of a fireplace at night and inhale the wisdom of the ages sipping a fine cabernet. Even the final case involving the possible destruction of MGM studios as we knew it contains the most complicated legal maneuvering you will read, yet like a movie plot, Nizer has you interested until the end when the lion roars along with you. Louis Nizer is one of the most captivating minds I have read and I highly recommend his works to anyone who makes a study of unique brilliance. It is redundant to say he's a wonderful writer too.

Quality Material in a Quality Book!

As a professional drum teacher with a current roster of 68 students per week, many of my students are very young. I've taught as young as two years old! I also have several special needs children on my roster. Andy's book is full of great things to do to keep the lessons light and fun without the little ones getting frustrated. It also serves to prepare them well for when they are ready to handle more mature material!

As an added bonus, the book is beautifully written and laid out and is made of durable materials. I was so pleased when I opened the envelope to find such a high quality book! Many of the drum books I've used over the years are tattered, dog-eared and coverless due to so much use and the books themselves not being made well.

If you're a parent looking to work with your child or a serious educator looking for curriculum for younger ones, look no further. Andy hit it out of the park with this one!

Perfect introduction for the junior drummer

Even though I have been teaching people how to play the drums for 20 years, I have struggled with finding appropriate teaching material for very young students. Drumset for Preschoolers promises to fill this gap in the market and I am pleased to say that it does so exceptionally well. There is detailed information for parents on how to choose and set up a drum set, interpret the color based notation system and play the interactive games described in the book. I have been using it with a 5 year old student for over a month - he really engages with the nursery rhymes and loves playing the 16th note fills around the kit! There is laughing, fun and the time just flies past. Both student and teacher are grateful.

Loving this book

I got this book for my two year old who has expressed interest in drumming and music but still doesn't have the attention span to sit through actual lessons. It has been easy enough for me, a musical illiterate, to follow and has lessons and games that my son enjoys while he picks up techniques that will help him later if he decides to stick with the drumming. Thanks, awesome book.

The best of oral history.

Read in hardcover when it first came out. Picked this edition for the photos, even tho it's an abridged edition. Studs Terkel was a
great interviewer. Being a Chicagoan, I was able to listen to his radio programs from the 1960's on. This and his other books are
fine oral history and most (with the present exception of "Race") are available on Kindle.

Subjective Reality and the Depression

When the Grapes of Wrath is presented to most young men and women in school these days, it represents the only image of the dustbowl and the Great Depression that most of them will see. There is little time spent covering this subject and the real issues of wealth distribution, and the contributing variables are generally not discussed. However, as is clear in Studs Terkel's book Hard Times, there were many unique perceptions of the Depression, and most people's education concerning the Depression fails to adequately address the disparities of wealth, social standing, and race that were paramount in the diverse vantage points that Terkel brings to life in his socio-economic collage. Simply telling young people that the stock market crash in October of 1929 brought on the Great Depression, and that many people suffered is an inadequate summation of the most prolific economic decline in the history of the US economy. This calamity befell all Americans to some degree, but the truth remains, for some it was barely a setback. If this economic catastrophe were to occur in our modern society, the social unrest would be mind-boggling.

In some aspects, the Great Depression served to equalize the social strata, but for the most part great losses were typical. Many people were losing their homes, the bulk of their investments and were forced to find a way to survive. This brought about significant change for the upper middle class, and came as a shock to many of them. Most were but pawns on a cruel chessboard. The idea that some number on a stock sheet could bring about financial demise was just not something many were unprepared to handle. This fact was true primarily among whites, for blacks, it was the same old oppression, the same old poverty and despite what the world around them did, they were as resilient as ever. Impossible as it may seem, but during this era, many blacks social standing even benefited from the Depression, albeit a crude but effective economic equalization.

It is equally hard to fathom, that there were some who prospered during the depression, and a good number of people who saw the entire crisis as something poor people had brought upon themselves for a lack of industriousness. The following excerpt in the Terkel book from Tony Soma, an Italian immigrant who had managed to secure some wealth and prospered during the Depression, is indicative of the narrow-mindedness that the wealthy seem apt to endorse. He said, "Today the poor are not guilty, just sick, mentally sick, poverty is always a sign of laziness." The affluent tend to ignore that the disparagement of such thinking is self perpetuating. Wherein, they fail to realize that poverty, like wealth gets passed onto subsequent generations almost as if it were genetic. Poverty is not as final as heredity, but is certainly a considerable obstacle to overcome, especially at the onset.

Certainly, there are rags to riches stories in every generation, including during the Depression, but there are many more riches to greater riches stories, but these are unremarkable, so we ignore the implications thereof. Likewise, poverty is a vicious circle, but somehow the wealthy do not grasp this. In fact, such characteristic disdain was displayed even during the Great Depression as evidenced in the remarks of the poor woman Terry Peggy, she states, "I think the rich were as contemptuous of the poor then as they are now." It is frighteningly reminiscent of modern haughtiness, that in this era, when men were as low as they could possibly go, that snobbery could still exist. Such stoicism to the outside environment is further expressed by the affluent photographer Daisy Singer, who at least had the decency to give a true account of her interpretation. Regarding her reflections on the Depression she said, "For years, I felt exempt. I grew up feeling immune and exempt from circumstances. One of the things I suffered from was that I never felt adversity." To think that such thoughts could be harbored in her mind, while a train car full of desperate hungry men looking for work could simultaneously be passing by her as she strolls hand in hand with her governess is remarkable. Such disparity in what people perceive is hard to fathom.

Unfortunately, this disparity or variance in subjectivity has been a part of the African American memory for quite some time. The class division, the disdain, the hunger, the yearning for something more; was sadly all a part of their inherent culture, so surviving the depression for many of them was akin to surviving a typical week. Disruption of perception was primarily a white problem, as the Depression served to disturb the working white world more than any other. Nonetheless, the exacerbation that hunger and sickness brought on additionally acted as catalyzing agents for social change. President Franklin Deleanor Roosevelt instituted his New Deal and the idea of welfare as a result of the misery incurred by the Great Depression and his many economic recovery programs seriously affected the shape of American policy for generations afterward. Conversely, the generation that suffered through the Depression was much more tolerant and level headed than our existing one, in that they waited much more patiently for reform and assistance than would be the case in present day society.

A terrifying visualization emerges if one were to imagine a current day depression. With the lack of moral fabric, the free-spiritedness, and the morally numbed down to violence TV-movie-video game society we have become, pure madness would abound. In fact, interview subject Robin Langston remarked, "If they really want anarchy, let a Depression come now. My sixteen year old son is not the person I was when I was sixteen. He has manly responsibilities. And he doesn't want any shit. When I was sixteen, I wasn't afraid to die. But the kid, sixteen now, is not afraid to kill." This statement was made in the 60's, imagine the difference between the "peace, Love and Rock n' Roll" generation and the perspective of today's generation. Kids nowadays shoot people for making fun of them; imagine what they would be capable of if the economy served to starve them. There aren't enough flak vests to go around. Factor this together with the microwave mindset of the average American, who has to have their desires met in the here and now, and we have a volatile potential for mass violence, bloodshed and social upheaval. The generations of the past were many times more long-suffering.

Additionally, given the magnitude of hardships that the Great Depression generation experienced, they were remarkably optimistic. Terkel's book illuminates the various standpoints very effectively, and collectively these serve to reshape the perceptions of the Depression for many. Herein, lies more proof that history is highly dependent upon the mood of the times, and that human subjectivity is paramount in telling the story, as he samples so many. Thereby, his samples from various socio-economic views provide an accurate stratification of history. His subsequent contrast to a more modern perception leaves us splashing about in the waters of uncertainty about the buoyancy of our existing ship. For the majority, Terkel's book will likely remind them that wise spending and living within your means, knowing how to barter, and how to live off the land are a sound life preserver when the boat capsizes. All in all, most stand to benefit greatly from Studs Terkel's work here. Definitely recommended.

A rather interesting guide towards professionalism.

The book has a really nice structure overall. I really don't understand why the section JAZZ TURNS/ADVANCE FLEXIBILITY had practically the same exercise. In any case, thanks is and exercise that can be easily transposed into all twelve keys anywhere on the horn. Therefore, there should been at least four more variations of jazz turns on there. Also,

Great concept: but needs revision

The book contains some helpful text in the beginning, and the rest of the book provides a variety of skill builders including long tones, lip slurs, tonguing exercises, scales and arpeggios. The range of notes goes from low pedal notes all the way to 4 ledger lines above the bass clef staff. Which makes it suitable for the intermediate to advanced player. The wide pitch range and lack of a logical progression in difficulty make it not well suited for a beginner.

There are some obvious errors in the way the book is laid out, with redundant exercises and omitted ones, missing accidentals, and other sloppy mistakes and oversights. This edition is worthy of a first draft, but not a published book. It is unfortunate, because there is a need for this type of book for trombone. Perhaps there will be a revised & improved edition in the future. I think it could be expanded into a much larger book, as long as more care is taken to do things right.
