A few are in love with him; an equal number are plotting to assassinate him. Most have dejectedly resigned themselves to being completely cut off from the world and confined in the suffocating environment of a harem.

Some recount chilling stories, such as the one who used to belong to a sheikh who flunked out of medical school but decided to operate on people anyway. He set up a "clinic" in his basement, bought slave "patients," and regularly performed surgery. Of course, he butchered most of them, but he was able to indulge his desire. Or the one who had been in the laboratory of a scientist who experimented with gags, dildos, and body glues. The experiments kept going wrong and dozens of subjects had to be put down, but were immediately replaced by fresh ones. Or the fussy prince who owned a crocodile, and if his slaves didn't perform the way he wished, he would have them fed to the crocodile on the spot.

Many tell similar stories of being lured with promises of glamorous jobs as models, musicians, or movie roles, then trapped and sold into slavery. Two actually entered servitude voluntarily. More than a few have gone quietly insane (violent insanity means a transfer elsewhere). Some responded to propositions online. Others were simply victims of opportunistic kidnappings. Fathers, brothers, step-fathers, law enforcement officers, clergy, school counselors, as well as professional traffickers, have all been involved in this unspeakable crime.

Voices from the Harem

This was an unexpected treat, because I wasn't sure about what I was getting into. All 111 girls in Prince Ibrahim's Il Giardino Posteriore harem tell their own stories of how they wound up in the harem and what they think about it. Some of them tell really spooky stories about where they had been before, like the girl who used to belong to a guy who flunked out of medical school but bought slaves so he could operate on people anyway. Of course, most of them died, but he got to indulge his desire. Or the one who had been in a mad scientist's laboratory and he would run bizarre experiments on the unfortunate victims there. Touching, moving, heart-breaking stories.

Good Book Disturbing Read.

If you are the parent of a teenage girl, you should put this book on your must-read list. It is a fascinating but extremely disturbing collection of anecdotes from girls who describe how they wound up in a slave harem. One reviewer said that there was "too much fantasy," but I think she completely missed the point. A number of girls have gone insane and have retreated into fantasy worlds where they feel safe, because they could no longer deal with their real lives locked away forever in a harem.

Disturbing Because It's True

Some of the women in the harem are ones that were also ones who were killed at the Rodeo in horrible ways. Some girls were killed after only being in the harem a few months for "poor performance" because they had trouble adjusting to having been kidnapped from their families and country. Prince Ibrahim killed a girl a month, just because he could. Some of the women had gone quietly insane after years of being cooped up in a pretty cage with no way out.
This series makes you wish you could send a few people to the Rodeo or the Ranch-a prison where the girls are roughly treated by the guards and no medical treatment is available. People sent there will eventually die after a few years of rough treatment, hot iron brandings, inadeequate food, sleep and care. It is horrible to know things like this are happening and that instead of being viewed as human beings or women, all they are viewed as is valuable livestock.

Firstenberg and Salas combine to write a useful guide for the innovative inventor intent on developing their wares for the Google Glass wearable device. Rather than focusing solely on the meat and potatoes of code and syntax, their intent is to give the reader a glimpse into the minds of the original designers of Glass as a platform. Not for dummies or beginners at all. You need to be able to read music to use this. No instruction at all.

For "Dummies"? You need to be able to sight read sheet music to be able to use this book. All it has is a bunch of songs, with no instruction whatsoever. You can download the same exact thing for free and print what you want to work on. This is 46 songs you may or may not want to learn. Unless you already know how to read music it is useless. The only thing good is that it has guitar chords. I advise anyone who wants to learn jazz piano to download a jazz 'cheat' book in PDF. If you want to learn a song, just print the song. This is not even a good book for using if you can read music since it does not have a ringed binder (The pages will not stay in place as it sits on the music stand) I really feel like I was cheated with this. I was looking for an instruction book, not a bunch of songs that I can't read.

Very enjoyable, advanced beginner/intermediate level! I really like this book and my piano teacher liked it so much too that I bought a copy for her, which she loves.

Beautiful book

Beautiful songs at just the right amount of difficulty where it takes me probably about a month to master one song if I practice at least 2-3 times a week. I would say you should be at least at a late intermediate level of piano proficiency to be able to successfully master these songs. I've been playing for 11 years and some of these are a good bit difficult. The first song in the book is relatively easy, so it's a good way to start out. My favorite song in this book "Breathless" is quite difficult to get the rhythm and fluid motion of your fingers in sync, so it has taken me a long time to even be able to play it at a steady slow rhythm. Overall great book of music for the piano player looking for calm, peaceful pieces that challenge you.

This collection is a delight. The individual pieces should be well within most pianists' technical abilities, and they're as much of a joy to play as I had hoped.

About the Author

Raymond C. Valentine is currently professor emeritus at the University of California, Davis and visiting scholar in the Marine Science Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was also the scientific founder of Calgene, Inc. (Davis, California), now a campus of Monsanto, Inc. The author’s scientific interests involve the use of reductionism to address problems of fundamental scientific and societal importance, such as agricultural productivity and aging. Some of his scientific accomplishments include the discovery of ferredoxin, the identification and naming of the nitrogen fixation (nif) genes, and the development of Roundup� resistance in crops. He holds BS and PhD degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

David L. Valentine is currently a professor of earth science with affiliations in ecology, evolution, and marine biology, as well as the Marine Science Institute, at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The author’s scientific interests involve the use of a systems-based approach to investigate the interaction between microbes and the earth, particularly in the subsurface and oceanic realms. He is best known for his research on the biogeochemistry of methane and other hydrocarbons, his works on archaeal metabolism and ecology, and his scientific work on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. DLV holds BS and MS degrees from the University of California at San Diego and MS and PhD degrees from the University of California at Irvine.
