Heavy reading

This book will especially appeal to people with a lot of knowledge in economic theory. It is very heavy reading and as an educated reader, but not a PhD economist, I had a hard time to push my way through. I had planned to use the book as a text to a community college general interest course in Sustainability, but it would be way over the heads of all but the most advanced economics students.

After these warnings, I am happy to have forced myself to keep going. This books shows how the whole question of sustainability is very complex and call into question the very basis of our economic systems. Mostly people use "sustainability" in a way to make everyone feel good about what they are doing. Look at the number of college courses that have had to add "sustainable" in their title. It ends up not meaning much at all. This books brings us face to face with hard questions we don't like to face. I'm not sure what we can do about it, but it is good to have to at least think about these questions and to learn what some deep thinking economists have proposed.

Perfect for Referencing

With "The Principles of Sustainability" Dresner wrote a great resource for everyone who wants to know what sustainability is, where as well as when it emerged, and where it might go. Especially for researchers this book offers plenty of well researched facts about the history of sustainability and how it became the concept that it is today.

After reading many guides on how to become sustainable I found it quite refreshing to read this book. Especially the first chapter about the history of sustainability made me think about how the evolution of sustainability still influences today's business practices and how we seem to diverge from the original idea. Reading Dresner's work reminds you of the basics of sustainability and causes you to re-think about the big sustainability manifestos out there such as "The Ecology of Commerce". Although I think that chapter three about the future of sustainability is a bit brief and better outlined in other books, I enjoyed the read and would recommend it to everyone who likes to take a step back before taking two steps ahead.

What we always need to know about Sustainability

This book is a must for anyone that is interested in Sustainability. It takes the reader through all the history and tries to give as much neccessary background information as possible to get the big picture on each historical event and milestone. Allthough the author sometimes becomes a bit too subjective, he doesn't impose a view and tries more to inform. Definitely a book worth having for references on Sustainability events.

Emil Ludwig (originally named Emil Cohn) was born in Breslau, now part of Poland. Born into a Jewish family, he was raised as a non-Jew but was not baptized. “Many persons have become Jews since Hitler," he said. "I have been a Jew since the murder of Walter Rathenau [in 1922], from which date I have emphasized that I am a Jew.”[1][2] Ludwig studied law but chose writing as a career. At first he wrote plays and novellas, also working as a journalist. In 1906, he moved to Switzerland, but, during World War I, he worked as a foreign correspondent for the Berliner Tageblatt in Vienna and Istanbul. He became a Swiss citizen in 1932, later emigrating to the United States in 1940.

To The Point and Informative

This book is well worth it to anyone serious about learning to tame the Windows beast. The jargon is kept to a minimum and the author gives excellent analogies to help the non-technical grasp the content. Full of useful techniques and lists all CMD commands, even the ones not listed in the command shell. The only reason it did not get 5 stars from me is because of the bulkiness of the book. Weighing in at 815 pgs. including index, I feel the author could have condensed the content, however, it was probably done for the sake of clarity. Great as a tutorial, reference, and brick after you're done!

Don't Ask Don't Tell in the Third Reich

Karl Schumacher is a major in the SS whose job it is to select those prisoners arriving at Sachsenhausen concentration camp who will be worked to death or shot. He is also a homosexual who must hide his proclivity or face a fate similar to his selectees. A surprisingly tender liaison with a young gypsy begins to turn Karl from his Nazi loyalties and he hatches a plan to escape.

Night and Fog has a few issues. The homosexual sex scenes are not gratuitously depicted—for which I was grateful—but the conversion of the gypsy boy seemed much too easy. There are several historical errors, anachronisms and illogical events that should have been avoided. The dialogue is unconvincing and occasionally sounds too much like twenty-first century American English. It is however, an interesting and sometimes thoughtful look at the Holocaust from a different perspective.

An All-Around Pleaser

I read more than 60% of this book on the first day, only slowing down towards the end to make it last longer. That was difficult to say the least, because from very early on in the narrative the pressure begins to build. It keeps the main characters scrambling and the pages turning.

The highly-researched descriptions of the concentration camps manages to be both raw and fascinating at once.

Though the romance at the heart of Night and Fog is between two men, there are also strong female characters, with some of the book's best scenes involving Rona, a Polish Jew. Historical figures such as Hermann G�ring are not written as caricatures but rather mesh easily with the rest of the characters.

Whether you're looking for a story of war, a story of love, or just for a good read, I highly suggest this book.

Good story. Below average writing.

A beautiful love story set in one of the world's worst historical nightmares. There is tension and suspense aplenty but what really drives the main characters of this story is the concern and love for one another.

On the down side I must admit that the writing is not very successful at times. It feels as if the writer needed more practice in his endeavor as a professional(?) writer.

But, all in all, it is a beautiful story, though not beautifully told.
