Updated every five years since 1989, the latest revision of the official history of the Academy Awards is a must-read for movie buffs. Osborne’s latest look back delivers trivia, personal narratives, and more than 750 black-and-white and full-color photographs. The heavy volume offers a year-by-year account of each Oscar night, complete with extensively captioned photos from the big six categories (best actor and actress, best supporting actor and actress, best director, and best film) as well as a listing of the nominees and winners of every other category awarded. Recommended for most public libraries and for academic libraries supporting film studies. --Rebecca Vnuk
Review
"[85 Years of the Oscar] represents a separate sort of pantheon, an almost literal hall of fame that requires readers to set up shop in a sturdy chair and make sure the teapot is full, because they won’t be getting up again anytime soon." The New York Times
"But what [85 Years of the Oscar] truly is, in this age of websites and databases, is something gloriously old-fashioneda beautiful, hardcover, painstakingly researched reference source on the Academy Awards and the classic movies they have honored. It's a fourstar present for any cinephile." The StarLedger

"A must-read for movie buffs" Booklist
"For an Academy that prides itself on honoring outstanding achievements in the film industry, this book lives up to the same standard in publishing. With more than eight decades of history, the nonprofit organization certainly has a story to tell. And this one is worth reading.” Toledo Free Press

Simply the BEST book anywhere about the Academy Awards
By Jerry Flack
Yes, Osborne's book is expensive, but I buy it every five years when a new edition is published. And, the Amazon.com price is a REAL BARGAIN. No other book even comes remotely close to the authenticity of this exceptionally thorough volume. I have noticed that other books about the Academy Awards either contain outright false information or skip significant categories, nominees, and winners. Osborne includes every conceivable fact about the entire 85 years of the Oscars. The side bar commentaries from winners are fascinating and insightful. The vintage photographs and movie posters are likewise bonus features. This brand new edition is a treasure for people who love great films and are cinema history fans.

Love this new edition - a must-have for Oscar fans
By LA Sandy
I've been collecting these books for many years. It's a must-have for Academy Awards fans. I love that there are more color photos in this new edition. I like that they used photos representing other categories besides just the acting winners, and added more behind-the-scenes shots - it seems like a more thoughtful approach than some of the earlier editions. It's jam-packed with information and very heavy; must weigh at least 5 or 6 lbs. Kind of an "old school" book for sure but a nice collector's item nonetheless. The very best part, in my opinion, is the dozens of anecdotes from winners sprinkled throughout the book.

Great series; unfortunate format change in this edition
By Fan of The Avengers The Saint The Champions
This has been a great series; the only reason I give the latest edition four stars instead of five is that they have gone back and changed many of the photos that accompany each year's awards, and for the first time they have left out many of the acting award winners. Most recently, both Mo'Nique and Christoph Waltz were not pictured for the year they both won. As unhappy as I am with that, I won't downgrade the rating too much - it's still a book any Oscar hound will have to have.
